Various outlets are reporting Villarreal will end up with Edgar Ié, central defender currently playing for Barcelona B. He's 21, a Portuguese youth international who can also play at right back if needed. With Barca B having been relegated, and his chances of breaking into the first team limited at present, I'm imagining a loan, possibly with a purchase option, is what will take place here. Presumably not a large expenditure of funds.
The Denis Cheryshev soap opera rumbles on; it didn't look as though he was at training, but then he is in the group appearing to promote adidas's RM jerseys and the like. Since we're trying to read tea leaves here, I'll just point out that Villarreal gave Bakambu number 17, which was Chery's number last year. Coincidence? At any rate, Victor Ruiz is trying to urge Chery to come here; Valencia is now in the Champions League so presumably could be an attractive destination; but Madrid continues to keep his cards close to its vest.
Speaking of Cédric Bukambu, he gave an interesting interview to a French digital sport magazine--if you read French, the complete article is here. The first part is about playing in Turkey--he said it seemed a good time to leave because Bursaspor were making a lot of changes--his only regret was not winning the Turkish cup, they played in two finals but lost both.
Cédric says he doesn't speak any Spanish at present but it will come on its own (i.e. he is confident of learning it). As far as the negotiations were concerned, he said he stayed out of it and the delay in signing was due to Bursaspor. There were other (unnamed) clubs interested in him but he liked our project.
Interestingly, when asked about Areola (another French-speaker in the dressing room) Cedric said "I knew he was here, but I didn't have any contact with him during the transfer window--it was a personal decision" but that Alphonse had 'welcomed him when he arrived'. He also mentioned Eric Bailly, another French-speaker.
And Cedric also said, "it's a big change compared to Bursa, which is a big city. Vila-real is not a big city" but that the weather was "super hot" both places. And he also mentioned wanting to play up top in a 4-4-2 with Soldado.
Finally, Bruno Soriano and Marcelino Garcia Toral have both been suspended for two matches as a result of their expulsions against Betis. Villarreal will appeal, but neither will be around for the Friday opening match at El Madrigal with its new pitch.
