In front of a crowd including former Castellón player and national team coach Vicente del Bosque, the orelluts went down to defeat 3-0 (4-0 on aggregate) to Real Unión Irún this evening in the Basque Country. Castellon were trying to become the first Valencian Community side to lift the Copa RFEF.
Like Villarreal against Sevilla, the magnitude of the task got harder due to an early goal, and two goals late on made the scoreline a little flattering to Irún--especially since they were outplayed in the first leg by all accounts, but scored a goal late on.
Castellón are the third Valencian Community team to fall in the final, after Elche (1999-2000) and Benidorm (2004-05). Castellón can now turn its attention to their remaining matches in the Tercera--they're currently second, a point behind Levante's B team, and four points ahead of our C team.
