Villarreal clobbers Celta de Vigo 4-1 at El Madrigal

Villarreal gave an exhibition at the Madrigal with a convincingly, overwhelming 4-1 victory against Celta de Vigo.

Villarreal supporters got to enjoy a delightful performance of their team at El Madrigal. The Yellow Submarine run on all cylinders even when Marcelino decided to rest players like Mario, Vietto, Cheryshev, Trigueros, and Jona. Vietto Cheryshev and Mario came on the second half, whereas Manu and Jona remained on the bench, looking ahead for the clash against Sevilla on Thursday for the Europa League. Sergio Marcos played his fourth consecutive game in La Liga. Rukavina got the start also.

It was not an easy victory by any means. Villarreal was leading the match 2-0 at half time but Celta de Vigo pulled one back. Nolito was a continuous threat through the game. Just when Celta was playing better, Villarreal sealed the game with a third goal that buried Celta's hopes of a tie. Then, along came the fourth goal that effectively ended the game.

Villarreal went out guns blazing from the start. In the first compasses of the game it was Villarreal who controlled the actions of the match. The Yellow Submarine gave advise of their offensive prowess during the 8th minute, after a nice built up play by Jaume Costa, who served up a nice pass to Gerard Moreno, but his attempt was saved by Sergio Álvarez.

The game was jammed for moments, when neither team could display their football with the prowess that they are used to. Villarreal knocked Sergio's goal several times but they lacked serenity to define plays in the final third.

However, it was during the last minutes of the first half when Villarreal had their best moments of the game. Gio dos Santos was close to open the score after a corner kick, but Sergio Álvarez managed to take it away. Gio got his rematch two minutes later after an impressive 52 meter run where Celta's players could not manage to stop him until after he buried the ball after a cross shot with his right foot. And just when the first half was about to end, Musacchio doubled the lead after heading the ball past Celta's GK, Sergio, following a corner taken by Moi Gómez.

After half-time, Villarreal kept showing their offensive adeptness. It was just barely one minute into the second half when Pina attempted a shot that went over the bar after a nice pass by Gerard. Celta de Vigo would not give up just yet and began to trouble Asenjo's goal. Celta got close into the scoreboard after Augusto Fernández pulled one back following a well taken free kick by Nolito.

Just when Celta de Vigo was looking better dominating possession, with Nolito being their spear of attack, Vietto made his triumphant appearance as usual. It was the 73th minute when Pina lifted a long ball a la Bruno, that Vietto controlled in the box, and struck past Celta's GK.

Those would not be Villarreal's last words, after Pina drifted into the middle and ceded the ball to Gerard, who would not waste his chance after burying a left struck shot past  Sergio Álvarez.
