Villarreal U-21 side defeat Leicester 3-2, move on to quarterfinals

A good match by all accounts, Villarreal never trailed but were pushed hard by the young Foxes.

Villarreal's "U-21" side recorded a 3-2 victory over Leicester's U-21 side today and move on to the quarterfinals of the Premier League International Cup.

The Young Submarine were a bit shorthanded, with Pablo Iniguez and Miguelón both being recalled to the first team to face Huesca tomorrow, but could have taken the lead early when Leo Suarez hit the post; in the 25th minute Suarez set up Carlos Martinez for our first goal.  Ramiro Guerra scored our second four minutes before halftime, but Leicester immediately answered through Cain.  However, five minutes after the restart Alfonso Pedraza scored for us, and though Leicester's Muskwe tallied five minutes later to make it 3-2, that was all the scoring--though Suarez and Carlos Martinez had good chances.  Keeper Ander Cantero was called on to make one key save to preserve the win late on,and did so.

A footnote, this match featured a female referee (Sarah Garratt) and I'm of course going to say she did a fine job since we won and she handed out three yellow cards to Leicester, only one to us, and showed a straight red to a Leicester player in the 89th minute.

With this win, we play--I believe--Athletic Bilbao's youth side, as I believe they defeated Manchester City's U-21 team tonight and so finished second in their group behind Sunderland. No idea when that will be played yet.

Enhorabuena, chavales!
