Villarreal defeated a game Viktoria Plzen club 1-0 in a rainy El Madrigal with a goal from Leo Baptistao in the 54th minute. The Yellow Submarine could have put the match away much earlier, as in the first 20 minutes they constantly stormed the Plzen goal. Roberto Soldado had the best chance, putting a free header wide with the goal gaping.
After that, Plzen came into the match and created a series of corners without ever really threatening to do anything with them.
In the second half Baptistao gave Villarreal the lead with a fine run and finish past a static Kozacik at the near post, and although the home side had some chances for a second goal, the Plzen defense made a number of good clearances. With ten minutes left Prochazka was sent off for his second yellow card--both fouls on Soldado --within six minutes, and the Submarine was content to see the rest of the match off comfortably.
In the other match in the group Rapid Vienna defeated Dinamo Minsk. To be honest, Minsk looks to be the worst of the other three clubs, Plzen the best. We host Minsk on Oct 22, while Rapid host Plzen.
With Marcelino playing a strong lineup today, the question now is what starting XI we will put out at Levante, as Adrian and Bakambu are still not available.
Endavant Villarreal!
