Only the first month into the season we have had drama, goals and injuries. The excitement is electric as our great form continues. Our victory against Rayo Vallecano was tense but spectacular with two of our summer signings on the score sheet. We had many commenters stating how impressed they were with Jonathan dos Santos. His passing and assists were incredible. It will be extremely hard to call who will start in midfield but it's great we have so much talent at our disposal.
Luciano Vietto, what a player. Game after game he fights and scores. He has now become our top goal scorer overall, scoring in both the league and Europe.
The Yellow Submarine is in full flow as we next take on newly promoted Eibar, yet another Basque based team that are bound to be a threat. Every year the Basque Country becomes stronger, whether it be Real Sociedad, Bilbao or these newcomers.
Elbar
Newly promoted and somewhat of a underdog, this team are not to be underestimated. This season they have taken on and beaten Real Sociedad and Elche. They narrowly lost out in a 2-1 defeat to Champions Atletico Madrid.
Judging from their form every player in squad is a threat. There leading goal scorers include defensive midfielders and LBs. But as we have one of the strongest set of the defenders in the league, we can be fairly confident on that front.
Villarreal
The usual suspects will be out--Costa, Jokic Gio all injured. Against Rayo, we were experimental with Uche up front on his own supported by 3 in attacking midfield. I was glad to see Espinosa start the match; I feel he is a lot more versatile than Moi. Defence-wise Ruiz was out and we didn’t really have an alternative other than Marin to play LB. I believe it will be very similar against Elbar. One possible theory is that we start possibly with Vietto instead of Uche as the Nigerian may not be 100%.
It is hard to predict the squad. Every player has proven his worth this season so far. It may prove to be the toughest selection for the gaffer after last weeks match against Rayo.
The squad:
- Asenjo and Juan Carlos.
- Rukavina, Mario, Gabriel, Musacchio, Víctor Ruiz and Adrián Marín.
- Bruno, Jonathan dos Santos, Pina, Trigueros, Espinosa, Moi Gómez and Cheryshev.
- Uche, Gerard and Vietto.
The major change is Cani dropping out of the squad, replaced by Victor Ruiz. Cani played 90 minutes on Sunday and with this likely to be a physical match, it's probably good to rest him ahead of Madrid (he always plays well against them).
History: Allen adds-- this is Eibar's first season in the Primera, but they were a fixture in the Segunda in the 1990's and we played them a number of times. I can't discover that we ever have won at their little Iparua ground which only holds between 5 and 6 thousand. The population of the town is only 27,000, so about half the size of Vila-real.
We last played Eibar in the 1999-2000 season: we lost 5-1 at home in El Madrigal in September 2009, one of our worst home defeats, and then lost in Eibar 2-0 in February 2000. That's been it as far as I know.
ENDAVANT VILLARREAL!! Vamos Submarino!
