Villarreal-Cádiz Copa del Rey GAMETHREAD

New, comments

Villarreal take a 2-1 lead into the home leg, with two away goals to help things. The aggregate winner will face the winner of the two Reals, Sociedad and Oviedo (0-0 after first leg).

How many of this XI (our starters last Sunday) will start against Cadiz? One or two?

Villarreal host Cádiz tonight at El Madrigal, with a 2-1 lead from the first leg (which gave us a chance to premiere that wonderful red third kit).  Tonight the Yellow Submarine will be back in yellow, but the lineup is expected to be mostly the same.

One change is enforced--Adrián Marin has to serve a one-game suspension for his red card last time, so Jaume Costa will probably play at left back.  I'd expect Israel Puerto and Chechu Dorado in the center of defense, and Rukavina on the right, as Mario is being rested again.

The question as always comes in midfield--we are resting Jonathan dos Santos this time, as well as Cheryshev, so maybe it's Pina and Trigueros in the middle, Espinosa and Nahuel on the wings?  Or does Moi get a start?  Or Bruno?  I'd think the plan ought to be to grab a couple of first half goals with Bruno in there, and then sub him in the last 30 minutes of the match.

(By the way, can I just comment that Pina's effort on Sunday against Atleti was superb?  His introduction worked out well for us....)

Up front, more of the same--Jose Naranjo and Gerard will probably start, but Gio dos Santos ought to come on sometime in the second half to knock off some of the rust.  Lucha gets another few days to rest on his laurels.

These sorts of matches can be real banana skins--Villarreal will be expected to win--but so far under Marcelino our young squad has handled these sorts of matches with aplomb.   Cadiz couldn't threaten our net with a man advantage for half an hour and a two-man advantage for the last 10 minutes of their home tie.  I'd be satisfied with an Apollon-type 2-0 coasting.....guess that's what I'll predict!

Endavant Villarreal!!
