An interesting weekend in the Segunda. By a quirk of the schedule so far, the five top teams going into this weekend all played away, and none of them won-- Villarreal, Elche and Almeria at least came away with draws, while Girona and Alcorcon both lost.
Elche and Huesca played out a tame 0-0 draw at the Alcoraz in Huesca. The locals have now gone four without defeat but face a tough match at Alcorcon next weekend. Elche, meanwhile, will host Recre.
Recre knocked off Lugo 3-0 at home, and among the goal scorers was Pawel Brozek, a Polish striker who joined the Decano from Celtic. Prior to that he was at Trabzonspor and Wisla Kraków, so he is well-traveled to say the least.
Racing rode a late goal from Mamadou Kone win their second league match in a row, 1-0 at Anduva over Mirandes. Carlos Bocanegra started and played the entire game for them, and ex-Villarreal man Marcos Gullón played about 35 minutes.
Almeria and Ponfe drew 2-2 at the Toralin, with Ulloa equalizing in the 70th minute after the hosts had gone in 2-1 up at halftime. This result leaves them third from bottom, above only Hercules (3-0 losers at home to Barca B) and Guadalajara, who lost an entertaining seven-goal thriller at home to Real Madrid Castilla. Guadalajara may not be long for the Segunda, but they are at least playing attacking football, though with only five goals scored and sixteen allowed, perhaps too much of the attacking is going in the other direction!
The same can't be said of Cordóba, who after scoring only four goals in their first five matches produced a veritable goal explosion--two goals!!--to defeat Girona 2-0. Their defense has been stingy so far, though three of the four goals they've allowed have come in the first 15 minutes of play. Next week they visit Villarreal, of course.
