With apologies for the short post, as I am headed out the door to work, this is just a headline for Villarreal's newest acquisition, forward Fernando Cavenaghi. Villarreal announced yesterday that they had signed him, and the news came essentially out of the blue. All of us were waiting for news of a striker, but no one that I know of had Cavenaghi on their radar.
Cavenaghi comes from River Plate in Argentina. He made his professional debut in 2000 with River, but has played in Russia and France as well, and is also another former-Mallorcan:
2000-2004: CA River Plate
2004-2006: Spartak Moscow
2006-2011: Bordeaux
2011: RCD Mallorca
2011: Internacional de Porto Alegre
2011-2012: CA River Plate
Last year, he managed 19 goals in 37 matches for River. Other goal totals include 1 goal in 7 matches for Internacional, 4 goals in 10 matches for Mallorca, 46 in 105 matches for Bordeaux, 13 in 53 for Spartak, and 71 in 122 in his first stint at River. Pretty good strike ratio overall (including sub appearances): 152/328.
Looks like a good signing. He'll be presented at 1:30 local time today. He is added to the current list of forwards that includes Uche and Gerard Moreno, and will eventually include Gerard Bordas and Giuseppe Rossi. I am seeing a nice partnership for the last few months of the season between the Argentinian and a certain Italian-American-Italian.
