Sorry, circumstances have prevented a preview for this match prior to now, and this one can only be brief. But, Villarreal take on Udinese in El Trofeo de la Cerámica this afternoon at 3:30 eastern time. It should be the first start for Rossi during the preseason.
Villarreal look to break the curse of three consecutive defeats (Sevilla, Bilbao, Valladolid), and Udinese is the last shot prior to the beginning of the season. Again, the team is shorthanded because of players returning from international duty.
The squad for the match includes:
- Goalkeepers: Diego López and Juan Carlos;
- Defenders: Javi Venta, Gonzalo, Godin, Cygan, Ángel and Costa.
- Midfielders: Josico, Cani, Edmilson, Santi Cazorla, Mati Fernández and Cristóbal.
- Forwards: Rossi, Llorente, Altidore and Joan Tomás.
Injuries: It is great to see Godin back and ready, although I would be surprised if he got the start. Pires is out because of his muscle strain (left thigh), Ibagaza because of a slight right ankle sprain, Viera because of some tendonitis, and Bruno because of a sore right ankle.
The team should be able to put out a team without any call-ups to start the match, but a number of internationals are obviously still allowed to rest. Villarreal NEEDS this win to put a better light on the preseason and give the squad some confidence heading up to Basque country next weekend. I think, with Rossi back, and Altidore perhaps getting the start, if not at least the second half, the team can do it. Villarreal 2-1 Udinese.
