The Yellows’ defensive depth is waining

Villarreal will lose loan star Mateo Gabbia during the January transfer window after an injury crisis over in Italy.

Gabbia joined the Yellow Submarine on a season-long loan in the summer after Samu Chukwueze was sold to AC Milan. The 24-year-old has made seven La Liga appearances since, but he has not set the world alight, playing in a back-line that has been generally poor.

Villarreal themselves are very short at the back, and they may need to add a minimum of two centre-backs this January, with David Garcia being linked. The Yellows currently have an ageing Aissa Mandi, a perhaps past it Raul Albiol and a struggling Jorge Cuenca as their main options.

Gabbia will leave that list, with AC Milan striking a deal with Villarreal to end the loan deal early due to significant injury problems in their back-line, Rather than signing two centre-backs, they would prefer to get Gabbia back and sign another, according to reports in Italy, and it’s claimed the Gabbia part of that plan is already organised.

Villarreal fans won’t feel as though Gabbia will be a huge loss in terms of talent, but it is another body lost amid weak depth in that area.

Villarreal USA has some bad news

A Villarreal USA announcement

It’s a sad day for Villarreal USA. After around a decade, we will no longer have website coverage from the start of 2024.

With the help of so many, Villarreal USA has covered the Yellow Submarine in English for many years, including so many highs, such as the Europa League title and Champions League semi-final, and indeed the lows, including relegation, and this season.

But it was confirmed recently that our funding will be cut by SB Nation, and they have decided to withhold the existing domain name.

With this, the team have decided the best course of action will be to cover the team on Twitter only for the time being. We feel it’s not quite the right time to invest in a whole new website and to start again, but we certainly aren’t ruling out taking that path in the future, so please stick with us as we find our way forward.

We thank all of our viewers for their support over the years, and, of course, we wish you a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We hope 2024 holds better things for our beloved Yellows.

A word from the editor, Jamie Kemble: “It’s a sad day for Villarreal USA. I’ve been the editor of the site for around 18 months, and we have managed consistent year-on-year growth during that time. Ultimately, it hasn’t been enough, and we have to accept that decision. We’re hoping that, at some point down the line, we can get into a position to start a new website, and that will be the aim, but it will take some time. For now, I’d like to thank all of our loyal readers, and I’d also like to thank everyone who has contributed to the website through the years, including Allen who kicked all this off, mainstays Zach and Robin, writers Rahul, Raul, Louis, and anyone else I may have missed. Beyond that, stay in touch with VUSA’s twitter account and have a wonderful festive period. See you at La Ceramica!”

Robin Stacey, British Writer: “Very sad times, I have been writing for this blog for 10 years. Villarreal USA is a massive part of the community of Villarreal so thank you all!. It’s amazing to debate with people from around the world via comments and podcasts. A shout out to my mentor Robin Julian Harris, the original British Villarreal Robin. Highlight being at Anfield for the Semi Final with Allen somehow picking me out 54,074 people. Been a amazing to work with everyone on the VUSA team over the years. Gracias and Endavant Villarreal!”

Allen Dodson, one of the old-timers on this site, say: “Thanks to Maddi, who really kicked this off back around 2008 with a WordPress blog, Sidarth who was the second member of the team when I joined and suggested we contact SBNation. We had a great run, like the team, had some ups and downs, but some real highlights too. It’s been a pleasure working with everyone here, and getting to know Lucy, Thomas, and folks at Villarreal itself, throughout the last 13 years or so. Thanks to all of you who have commented, debated, celebrated throughout the years with us. I’ll miss this site a lot.”

An important three points

Villarreal eased fears of being sucked into a relegation battle with a win in their last game before the Christmas break.

The Yellow Submarine raced into a 3-0 lead against strugglers Celta Vigo on Wednesday night before making hard work of the win.

Alfonso Pedraza rifled one home from an angle before limping off with an injury, and it was 2-0 when Aissa Mandi calmy dispatched a rebound five minutes before half-time.

A trip on Alberto Moreno led to a penalty for Dani Parejo to smash home three minutes after the break, and that should have been that.

The Yellows got the job done

But Anastasios Douvikas knocked one home at the back post after a flicked on free-kick in the 52nd minute, and Jorgen Strand Larsen made it 3-2 before the hour mark.

Villarreal had to defend well, but they largely looked after the ball well, and barring one strong Filip Jorgensen save, they weren’t troubled too much in the late stages of the game, and that’s despite 15 minutes of added time.

The result is that Villarreal move six points ahead of Celta in the final relegation spot, and the they are now up to 13th in the table - at least for now. The fixture was the final before the break, and Marcelino’s men are next in action against Valencia on January 2 at Mestalla.

The Yellows could do with finishing the year with a win

Villarreal are back in La Liga action on Wednesday night in their final game before the festive break, and you can join the conversation right here.

The Yellow Submarine have put together a disastrous start to the season, and Marcelino can be forgiven for counting down the days until the January transfer window.

But before then, the Yellows have a relegation six-pointer of sorts, taking on Celta Vigo at home on Wednesday evening. The Asturian club are currently 18th in the table, just three points behind Villarreal in 15th.

A defeat here would be a terrible way to end the year, bringing up a real concern of relegation, while a win could do quite the opposite. We’re hoping for the latter!

The Yellows have a number of injury concerns here, with Gerard Moreno picking up an ankle issue over the weekend, while Alex Baena also picked up a fresh issue. Those players add to an already lengthy injury list that features Alberto Moreno, Mateo Gabbia, Juan Foyth and others.

Another heavy defeat for the Yellows

Villarreal boss Marcelino has sent a serious warning to his players after Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

The Yellow Submarine put on a hugely disappointing display, once again looking far inferior against a quality team, failing to compete in a number positions.

Jose Luis Morales did manage to pull it back to 2-1 at one stage, but Villarreal never truly looked in the game.

They also lost both Alex Baena and Gerard Moreno to injury, and the injuries are really piling up, with Yeremy Pino out for the season, while Mateo Gabbia, Juan Foyth, Alberto Moreno and others are also out.

Still, Villarreal have conceded nine goals in three games, and as they prepare for their last game before the winter break, against Celta Vigo, head coach Marcelino has sent a clear warning.

“I hope it (the break) goes well,” he said after the game. “Because if, from January, we get the same amount of points, we are going to the Segunda. We have to improve parts of our game. In the last three games, we have conceded nine goals. If we concede nine goals every three games, we are in the Segunda.”

Asked if Villarreal will be active in the summer window, Marce added: “Yes, we are going to go into the market. I don’t think the injuries will be the argument for it.”

The Yellow Submarine picked up a big win away from home on Thursday night, defeating Stade-Rennais after a chaotic game to top their Europa League group, and they are now looking for a big three points on the road in La Liga.

Real Madrid followed up a La Liga draw with Real betis last weekend with as 3-2 win over Union Berlin in the Champions League this week.
Villarreal have racked up a hefty prize pot after securing passage to the Europa League Round of 16 with a dramatic win on Thursday night.

Marcelino’s men made the trip to Rennes to play Stade Rennais knowing they had to win to top the group following last week’s draw with Maccabi Haifa.

They did just that. Gerard Moreno scored a penalty in the 36th minute, with the home side equalising virtually straight from kick-off. The Yellows they reinstalled their lead with a deflected Illias effort, but Ludovic Blas equalised in the 79th minute. Still, Villarreal got back ahead after a neat one-two from Dani Perjo with Alejandro Baena before a composed finish.

There was still tiem for more drama, with Stade Rennais appearing to score in the 101st minute, but at the start of the move, a free-kick hit the bar and rebounded straight back to the free-kick taker without touching another player. That is not allowed, and the referee asked VAR to review the incident, leading to conformation of his suspicion.

The result means Villarreal finish top of the group, and they will miss the Round of 32 playoff round as a consecuence, securing passage straight through to the Round of 16.

For winning the group, Villarreal will pocket no less than €4.73million if you inlclude the fee they received for reaching the group stage. They will now welcome a further €1.7million for progressing to the Round of 16, while four wins and a draw will land them further prize money worth £2.73million.

That’s a total of €9.16million up to this stage, and they can secure a further €1.8million should they reach the quarter finals in the new year.
