Mexico's starting lineup for their first match (Friday the 13th against Cameroun) has been leaked, and the main interest was who would start in goal (Ochoa) and who would start up front (Gio and Peralta):
Chicharito forced to wait/ESPN FC
This should not be a surprise, as Michael Cox, in his excellent Zonal Marking piece on Mexico, predicted exactly this. Worth reading for an analysis of the team, and Gio's role in it. Plus, where else can you read that a player "pootles up and down the line rather ineffectively'? Thanks, Michael.
Mexico: talented squad, but highly unpredictable/Zonal Marking
Ryan Rosenblatt spent some time looking at the midfield selections for Mexico. He's probably right that Guardado's form has been mostly terrible, but after the Medina and Montes injuries, I am not really sure they could do anything better.
Mexico's WC lineup has holes/ SBNation
One thing I have been impressed with in the Mexico matches I have seen is their ability to shoot well from distance. Of course we have seen Gio score some excellent goals this way, and I have really liked Miguel Layún. We have been talking about Villarreal's possible interest in other Mexican players before, and he is one I would really like to see us try to sign. Can play at left or right back, and has Spanish citizenship, but no European experience. Worth a thought!
