Lugo defeat Cadiz to join the Segunda

Stay connected for news and updates

There were two important matches settled by penalty shootouts yesterday. In the better-played of the two (at least as far as scoring goals was concerned) Cadiz defeated Lugo 3-1 after regulation, which, since Lugo had defeated Cadiz by the same score in their ground, meant extra time had to be played. And since that didn't break the deadlock, the match went to penalties and Lugo defeated Cadiz to claim the last place on offer in the Segunda, Ponferradina having won their match against Tenerife the day before.

So, the promoted teams to the Segunda are Real Madrid Castilla, Mirandes, Ponferradina and Lugo.

Lugo last appeared in the Segunda in the 1992-1993 season, when they were relegated and Villarreal finished 13th. You can see a little bit of our final match against Lugo in this clip: La culminación del milagro (92-93) - Vìdeo Dailymotion (it is the second game shown, the first is against Mallorca who came fourth in the table that year)
