Euro 2012, Day Six: Open Thread

Maybe Nigel De Jong will introduce himself to someone else today.

Surprises in the opening round of matches in Group B, with both the Netherlands and Portugal losing. Must-wins for both today. The Portuguese deserved better against Germany, but maybe the Oranje did not against Denmark.

Denmark vs. Portugal, 12 noon ET

The Danes have put the cat among the pigeons, as it were. Michael Krohn-Dehli lifted the world's #9 team over a profligate Dutch side and need just a point today to be in good shape to advance.

But don't expect the Portuguese to spurn so many chances. Cristiano Ronaldo and company just could not break through against the Germans, though they only came to life after Mario Gomez's opener. Perhaps playing for more than 15 minutes will help today.

Netherlands vs. Germany, 2:45 pm ET

The Dutch could easily bow out of Euro 2012 today after just two games. It's incumbent on Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder to ensure that does not happen. And maybe finding a replacement for John Heitinga; Jaap Stam he is not.

Die Mannschaft was largely unimpressive on Saturday but found a way to win. That's what short tournaments are about. Let's see if Joachim Low shakes up the midfield to counter the Dutch men of steel -- Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong.
