Thread: Villarreal B vs. Barcelona B

Who will be the next Sergi Busquets and Gonzalo Castellani?

Another week, another Villarreal vs. Barcelona showdown. This time it's the only two filiales in Spanish professional football. Should be a good one under the Friday night lights at the Ciudad Deportiva.

The minisubmarino has seen a boatload of changes under Julio Velázquez, including eleven(!) departures, two loan arrivals, and five promotions from the 'C' team. Let's see if either Esteban Orfano or Fernando Barrientos features tonight. And Barcelona B has suffered a number of losses to Pep Guardiola's injury-ravaged 'A' team, so they are also a team in flux.

Star-divide

Lineups:

Villarreal B (4-2-2-2): Mariño; Truyols, Lejeune, Kiko, J. Costa; Llorente, Edu Ramos; Lucas, Manu; Juanto, Bordas.

Barcelona B: Oier; Montoya, Bartra, Armando, Planas, Muniesa, Rafinha, Riverola, Deulofeu, Rodri, Kiko.

The match begins at 3 pm Eastern Time. Friday night matches allow us to watch, even if recent results have been less than desirable. Endavant minisubmarino!

And it's not even close

I wondered how Pere possibly recovered that quickly. Their lineup is interesting, I guess…

Changes from the typical XI

Edu Ramos auditioning for Gullon’s place.
Truyols for the injured Pere.
Juanto-Bordas is a nice combination of youth and experience up front.

The defense really troubles our keepers

With short back passes. Maybe our goal kicks wouldn’t be so poor in the face of less pressure.

I like Llorente a lot; stepping up in Gullon’s absence.

What a play by Montoya in 27'

Oier shuts down Bordas in 31'

Thought the old man would get one. But a goal or two is coming for us.

Barca B playing a very high line, and doing so poorly. Way too many chances for the strikers in yellow, but our finishing continues to leave something to be desired.

we have had the better of the play but one good save from Oier and one ice celarance off the line. Barca B chances more from quick counters or Kiko’s poor backpasses, but we’ve gotten in the way of the crosses and shots well enough.
impressed w/Trigueros and Llorente, and good to see Truyols back. The youngsters up front are showing promise—Juanto unlucky not to be on the scoresheet.

A good first half

but we don’t have a goal to show for it. We’re playing a lot more quickly through the midfield and getting balls through to the strikers, Juanto in a particular had a good half.

brief recap

first half I thought we looked quite good, a bit clogged up in midfield at times but we had some nice passing. Second half we seemed to go more vertical in attack and it didn’t work as well.
I thought Juanto was indeed fouled for a penalty at least once, but he did go to ground pretty easily. Other than that he looked good but communication w/Porcar and Bordas wasn’t always great.
Referee was pretty bad.
It wasn’t quite as entertaining a game as I had hoped for, but the conditions had a lot to do with that. Mariño was great, actually our defense was more together than I expected—apart from a couple of quick breaks Barca B looked pretty ordinary. My “three up” would be Marino, Porcar and Juanto (with Llorente a close fourth); my three down Kiko, Bordas, and Jaume Costa just because he has to sit now.
Right now we’re on 23 points, ahead of Xerez (home to Alcorcon) and Alcoyano (away to Numancia) on goal difference. The teams below us:
20 Cartagena host Hercules on Sunday
18 Huesca host Sabadell tomorrow
17 Girona away to Elche tomorrow
16 Nastic away to Valladolid Sunday

we’re 5 points below the next teams (Las Palmas, Sabadell)

Endavant Villarreal!!
