Thread: Villarreal vs. Granada

Ikechukwu Uche: You've cost us money and points.

A six-pointer at El Madrigal this evening when Villarreal hosts Granada. I'd argue it's worth seven, as we slumped to a poor 1-0 defeat at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes. Time for revenge, with our danger man Ikechukwu Uche on the bench.

Lineups:

Villarreal (4-2-2-2): D. López; Angel, Zapata, Marchena, Oriol; Senna, Borja; Cani, Camuñas; Nilmar, Ruben.

Granada (4-4-1-1): Julio César; Nyom, Íñigo López, Borja Gómez, Siqueira; Fran Rico, Mikel Rico, Jara, Benítez; Martins; Ighalo.

Quick team news: Mateo Musacchio is a late scratch, while Nilmar gets his first start in 2012. Borja Valero slides into the doble pivote, and Carlos Marchena pairs with Cristián Zapata in central defense.

The match begins at 1:45 pm Eastern Time. Streams should be available in this odd time slot. Endavant Villarreal!

Nilmar with a half-chance in 7'

But dallied too long on the ball. Timing being off is no surprise. Camunas with good pressure though not playing up front.

Attacking down the left through an active Oriol. Granada doesn’t look so hot in back either.

Nearly the 1-0 goal on a nice build-up with Ruben. Speedy and tall working OK so far.

Nice way to cap off a good move. Cani with the slide-rule pass, but all to do for the Argentine striker. En racha, senores.

1-0 21'

This reminds me of last year’s team. Still uncertain in central defense, but the rest of the machine is slick. Absolutely bossing the midfield, and creating chances up front. The punch comes from Ruben right now.

I started watching about 7 minutes in...

and we looked great for the first 15-20. After that, I think we lost the possession battle for large stretches, and Granada snuck a few good chances in there. Missing Bruno in the double pivot, but Borja has been visible, which isn’t always the case when he gets put into the middle. Very happy with most of what Nilmar has been providing so far.

Endavant Villarreal!

by maddi on Feb 12, 2012 8:35 PM CET reply actions

excellent first half from Granada

Senna and Borja nullified in midfield and the back four very comfortable apart from a couple of awkward moments. Granada are findining space for the runners on the right and left (Oriol having trouble whenever granada’s right winger runs at him) but they lack quality attacking players in the center to make ti count. Ighalo hasn’t troubled Marchena or Zapata.

by Jiwonsi on Feb 12, 2012 8:38 PM CET reply actions

those are some orange colored glasses you are wearing...

Borja was surely not nullified; he may not have played the traditional defensive role in the double pivot, but he directed a significant amount of the play from about 15 minutes onward. And Senna was frequently in the mix winning possession.

Jiwonsi is giddy after a 4-0 win

2 goals for Jonas in injury time are fine with me; I doubt worrying about Sporting’s goal difference for the drop at the end of the year but I know we certainly won’t be worrying about Valencia’s!

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Feb 12, 2012 8:46 PM CET up reply actions

Senna? that dude is going off in the 60th minute

Yes he’s in the mix but he was swamped in his own half and too slow to get back at times. Borja has contributed less than he did last match, simply because he’s been playing deep where the ball is contested and not getting forward enough. I expect Castellani to come on for Senna, Marchena to move up and Borja to start taking shots from just outside the penalty box.

by Jiwonsi on Feb 12, 2012 8:51 PM CET up reply actions

To all of your points

We are actually behind on possession: 49-51%.

With the result, we go up to 12th. Tied with Sevilla (game in hand) and Betis; we have the tiebreak on both. 3 points above Racing in 18th.

only 2 shots on goal

Cani hasn’t been very noticeable except for his pass to Ruben for the goal. We’ve been giving up possession a lot as you say, stats are about 50-50.
Only 2 shots on goal.
Zapata had one very good moment, when he adroitly broke up a play in midfield that would have resulted in a one-on-one, I think. One scary moment, when he had a short back pass to Diego Lopez but he (barely) hit it hard enough.

3-1 WIN WIN WIN

Still not sure exactly how that happened, but a minute of quality from Camunas and Borja put us ahead, a keeper error made it 3-1 and that was that. Granada played far better than they did at home against us actually, but part of that was due to Bruno’s absence. You really realize how important he is to us when he’s not there.

Recap away, Sid. You note I got the two-goal margin right, even if my clean sheet didn’t happen (I figured Musacchio would be playing and would’ve gotten on that guy, you know)……Onward and upward!!

by siempre_riquelme on Feb 12, 2012 9:42 PM CET reply actions

bruno was much missed

With Borja playing deep, Cani and Camuñas can’t be counted on to orchestrate the attack. Cani’s assist was notable only because of Ruben’s excellent finish, while Borja’s goal was remarkable too and came at an opportune moment (after Castellazi came on and Camuñas and Borja changed positions. Granada won the central midfield battle for short spells, but even with two or three players making runs into the box the quality of the crossing was poor, as well as the interplay in the final third of Villarreal’s half.

by Jiwonsi on Feb 12, 2012 9:43 PM CET reply actions

I agree, Borja playing deep wasn't terrific. it's Castellani, not Castellazi btw

Cani hardly featured apart from the one assist.
Borja was so much happier once he changed positions, but he did work very hard wherever he was.
Good to see Martinuccio get some time—he looked good; good to see Nilmar for an hour. There were flashes of the old Nilmar, overall everyone had to be happy with his effort. He did look to me like he was starting to fade a bit, so good timing on that substitution.

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Feb 12, 2012 9:49 PM CET reply actions

oops

I misread the name on the back. Is he a left-sided midfielder, by the way? I though he would slot in beside Senna but instead he was on the left giving Oriol some cover, the showing up to take potshots at goal.

by Jiwonsi on Feb 12, 2012 9:53 PM CET reply actions

i thought he played more in the middle with the B team

he’s really a right-footed attacking midfielder, can play on either wing as well. He’ll be 25 in August, we really haven’t seen that much of him because we had too many non-EU players on the B team and he was unable to qualify as an EU player (so many Argentinians can because of italian heritage, like Musacchio and Martinuccio).

It is interesting that the player I thought would be the successor to Bruno—who I would have expected to start when he was suspended—was Marcos Gullón. I said earlier this year I thought he was the player from B who would make the jump next, but instead it was Castellani, a more attacking player.

Endavant Villarreal!!

what a strange situation

we should slow down the game when we are leading and speed it up when level, but it seems we are doing the different thing (even the slow build-up gave us Borja’s goal)

Real Madrid 4-2 Levante

The end of La Liga. Ronaldo with a hat-trick. The visitors went ahead early, but Iborra was sent off and a penalty awarded at 1-0. On even terms down a man, it was curtains.

Endavant, a triomfar, a guanyar Villarreal!

by siempre_riquelme on Feb 12, 2012 11:27 PM CET reply actions

that was a difficult call to make--the Iborra one

it was so blatant that even though it had to be accidental you couldn’t ignore it—Iborra almost caught the ball rather than trapping it on his chest, and it hit one of his arms a second time as well. I would’ve been livid if it hadn’t been given, if we were the opponent; then again, if it were on e of our guys, I would have been livid if it had been! Simply no way for the referee to win on that one.

Mallenco should have sent off Sergio Ramos shortly before that for a nasty kick on Del Horno—he got a yellow, but deserved red.

On the subject of referees, I hope we don’t have the referee we had today again—he was below even the La Liga average. It seemed he was not always in good position—he missed a blatant handball in the buildup to a Granada attack—and his decisions were confusing. if I had been a player I would have had a hard time knowing what was acceptable and what was not. Nilmar got hacked twice within a minute with the ref looking on, other challenges with minimal contact were penalized. I think our old veteran Marcos Senna almost tok pity on him at one point—he awarded a FK to Granada when a player fell over Senna’s leg after he had cleared the ball away and Senna just shook his head with this pitying smile…. His only saving grace was he did leave his yellow card in his pocket most of the time.

I’ll say what I did last week—that newly-promoted ref did a decent job inasmuch as I only noticed him in the last 20 minutes or so of the match. The guy today I noticed after about 5 minutes—he was that bad.

Endavant Villarreal!!
