The Final Countdown: 2012 Winter Transfer Window

Let Gio go, Spurs. Please!

The European transfer window closes at midnight on January 31. Villarreal has not confirmed any moves to its 'A' team, aside from the promotion of Gonzalo Castellani. The 'B' team has seen significant changes, with a number of players moving on and the arrival of Argentine midfielder Fernando Barrientos.

Brazilian striker Nilmar's long-rumored move to São Paulo FC may have hit a snag, while Mexican international Giovani dos Santos may remain at Tottenham Hotspur. Other names have emerged to reinforce our depleted strike force-- particularly with the injury to Marco Ruben-- while further departures appear unlikely. But Srs. Roig and Llaneza have been known to spring a surprise or two in the final hours. Ikechukwu Uche over the summer, for one.

Star-divide

Rumored targets:

Out: Nilmar (São Paulo), Borja Valero (Atlético Madrid, Málaga).

In: John Carew (West Ham United), dos Santos (Tottenham), Vicente Iborra (Levante), Alejandro Martinuccio (Fluminense), Uche (Granada), Nikola Zigic (Birmingham City).

We'll keep you posted on the latest developments. Share rumors, recommendations, and transfers in the comments.

WTF? Why are we doing that???

weaken the B, strengthen an opponent, and sell a promising prospect for peanuts? I’m not happy.
Well, I said he was ready for the Primera…..

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Jan 31, 2012 11:34 AM CET up reply actions

I think it's for the player.

Gullon deserved an opportunity in the Primera. And he wasn’t getting it here, for whatever. Hope he proves himself and then comes back to succeed. Great kid, great attitude.

Best of luck, Marcos. Soon our management will appreciate your value.

sounds more suited to England, perhaps?

just saying based on what’s here, I haven’t seen him play.

OK—so with Gullon leaving, does that tell us anything about anything? I have this strange feeling that either things are going much worse than we realize behind the scenes, or else there is something we aren’t expecting going to be announced shortly before the deadline. I fear the former, but hope the latter.

Preciado has been sacked as manager of Sporting. Just announced.

by Allen Dodson on Jan 31, 2012 12:11 PM CET reply actions

yes, I did

and it is sad. But their last couple of matches he had that look of a man who expected the sack, I thought. A bit like Garrido his last couple of matches, he was less animated than usual and seemed resigned to his fate. Will be curious to see what happens next.

another name coming up we're interested in is this young fellow

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luc_Castaignos

a promising player, but only 19. Scored bundles of goals for Feyonoord last year. Presumably Inter would loan him; of course they just signed Freddy Guarin as noted above

never heard of martinuccio before

played in 14 matches of 38 last season (428minutes) and scored 1 goal. 24 years old and what i read his main attribute is his speed. transfermarkt says his value is 2m€

by Bill Lumbergh on Jan 31, 2012 1:18 PM CET reply actions

I saw him play in the Copa Libertadores for Penarol

he is a good prospect but I think we need an experienced player upfront like Zigic or Carew.

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Jan 31, 2012 1:30 PM CET up reply actions

24 years old

is he a prospect anymore? should be dominating brazilian league in that age :)

by Bill Lumbergh on Jan 31, 2012 1:37 PM CET up reply actions

maybe he's a late bloomer, looking at his resume

played in Primera B Metropolitana at age 20, then a couple of years with Penarol. A small guy, but fast, and I think less fragile than Nilmar

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Jan 31, 2012 2:18 PM CET up reply actions

I think that

Roma will buy him.
They are selling David Pizarro, to City, so they will have some cash to splash around.

by Jens Kristian Nielsen on Jan 31, 2012 1:36 PM CET up reply actions

rumor in Italy is Lazio!

who knows?

as for Gullon, official site has something about it. I’m really not sure what this is—a loan, a sale with a provision for a buyback (much like we did with Santi and Recre years ago), or what. Apparently no money has changed hands but we get €100k if he plays in 10 games or more. Seems crazy to me

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Jan 31, 2012 2:05 PM CET up reply actions

Lazio have given us an offer for Nilmar

half an hour ago—no idea what it is

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Jan 31, 2012 3:06 PM CET up reply actions

this is what's going to happen

they offer something like 8m, we take it since it’s so late, we are panicking and will offer it all to spurs for gio.
we end up selling nilmar too cheap and pay overprice for gio like we did with jdeguz.

by Bill Lumbergh on Jan 31, 2012 3:20 PM CET up reply actions

At this point,

I don’t think there is a “too cheap” for Nilmar. I know we are short on strikers, but based on the current situation and a look at history, I do not see Nilmar being productive in our system. I think that if he is left to sit on the bench, his value only drops.

While I do not knwo if we have gotten 4m in value for him over the last few years (the drop from 12m to 8m), taking that much loss on him doesn’t seem to be the end of the world, considering the value he has brought both in terms of name recognition and his period of success, although fleeting.

Endavant Villarreal!

by maddi on Jan 31, 2012 3:25 PM CET up reply actions

that's true

still it would quite dissapointing to get “only” 8m. last summer rumors valued him somewhere around 17m. transfermarkt values him 20m, which is clearly overprice but still.

by Bill Lumbergh on Jan 31, 2012 3:30 PM CET up reply actions

Nilmar is one of those conundrums...

Tremendous skill, but terribly injury-prone. With his injuries, no club can seriously believe he is going to live up to his potential. While he could arguably still be in the 10-15m range, a deal like that would be pretty shocking to me.

Endavant Villarreal!

by maddi on Jan 31, 2012 3:33 PM CET up reply actions

i think transfermarkt is way off here

given his injury record. I’d like to get 10m for him but hey 8m is better than nothing. Problem is I don’t think Tottenham are going to let Gio leave anyway, so I’d rather see us bring in two people—a Zigic-type experienced goalscorer with La Liga experience, and the Argentine ex-Peñarol guy who gives us speed as a second striker.

But the longer things go without anything firm happening, the more pessimistic I am becoming.

Supposedly Granada want the young Brazilian who was mentioned in the Nilmar article yesterday

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Jan 31, 2012 3:47 PM CET up reply actions

latest is whatever the offer was, we said NO

I think either he moves to Brazil or we’re stuck with him—and I’m beginning to suspect the latter.

EPM articles of interest

they still seem optimistic Nilmar is going to Brazil (and note the deal does NOT have to conclude today, as the Brazilian transfer deadline is longer):
http://www.elperiodicomediterraneo.com/noticias/deportes/las-posturas-entre-sao-paulo-y-nilmar-cada-vez-mas-proximas_714601.html

and meanwhile it does look as though Martinaccio is our first choice with Tottenham refusing to deal Gio:
http://www.elperiodicomediterraneo.com/noticias/deportes/el-submarino-negocia-con-lsquo-flu-rsquo-por-punta-argentino-martinuccio_714603.html

which doesn’t really solve anything for this weekend does it? Apparently Negredo will miss the game for Sevilla with an injury, so maybe both teams will play a 4-6-0 :)

From Racing

most unlikely! Although there are some reports that it is for 100.000 euros should he play 12 matches. However if a contract is rescinded surely you walk free and can choose where to go.

by Kenez on Jan 31, 2012 6:13 PM CET up reply actions

yes, not everything is fitting together

what i’ve seen is it’s for the rest of this season, all of the next, with an ‘option’ for another year. And I’ve seen the same as Kenez about the appearance fee.

If we rescinded his contract, there must be something behind the scenes we don’t know about. I could see loaning him since we have lots of midfielders in the A team, but letting him walk for nothing seems very strange indeed.

Nilmar is definitely NOT going to Lazio

rumored they offered €9MM, but if I know my Italian football clubs it would probably have been payable over 3-4 years. And I don’t know if there would have been time to agree on salary and image rights anyhow.
Sao Paolo twitter says Nilmar is “nearly there”.

4 1/2 hrs (more or less) to go, I’m guessing we get one player in and Nilmar leaves. If you haven’t already voted in our poll….

Right-sided midfielder. Worth a flier if Velazquez doesn’t like what he has. And that seems quite clear, based on the volume of players offloaded.

Nilmar--nothing new

Victor Franch (Onda Cero Castellon) says there won’t be anything new today. So I guess we wait….

so at the moment OFFICIALLY we have Martinuccio on loan for the A team plus Esteban Orfano for the B team

we appear to be trying to get Zigic, perhaps on loan as well (and if no luck there, I expect we may try for Carew since those two were bracketed together earlier).

and there is also the Chilean youngster Robles who was working out with us, would be B team help as well if he comes

unless Tottenham suddenly comes to their senses and accepts our offer for Gio, that may be it.

OK, there is a brief writeup about Martinuccio now posted.

I think if Tottenham came to their senses and allowed us to sign Gio for a reasonable price, we would still do it. But they don’t seem willing to. I don’t see any way Dos Santos is getting off the Spurs bench until the summer.

We’re still out there apparently looking for another, but it has been reported that we are keeping Nilmar until the end of the season. According to canal fichajes:
Villareal: Nilmar se queda, al menos, hasta final de temporada.

they’ve been pretty accurate with stuff, but it would help if they could spell our name right
