Thread: Villarreal - Bayern Munich

Remember the last time Bruno faced German opposition at home?

Matchday 1. Our return to the Champions League. The German giant comes to town. Enough said.

No Arjen Robben, but Bayern Munich will be plenty dangerous up front with Mario Gómez, Thomas Müller, and Franck Ribéry. It's a different story on the back end, and that's what Villarreal must exploit.

Villarreal is without Borja Valero (suspension), and Joan Oriol has been left out by manager Juan Carlos Garrido. So there will be at least two changes to our "typical" XI, and likely more.

Here's what I would like to see:

Diego López
Mario - Zapata - Gonzalo - Catalá
de Guzmán - Senna - Bruno - Cani
Nilmar - Rossi

I think the match will be won in the central midfield. How will Carlos Marchena, Marcos Senna, and/or Bruno Soriano compete with Bastian Schweinsteiger (a natural wing player) and Brazilian Luis Gustavo? If we control the tempo and limit Bayern's counterattacks, we stand a good chance to earn a result.

Keep an eye on Napoli away to Manchester City, the other match in Group A. Should be another cracker, even if the Italians have only played one top flight match this season. A draw there would be perfect for us.

Endavant Villarreal!

Garrido seems concerned about the midfield too

without Borja, the 4-3-1-2 with Bruno/Senna/Marchena looks quite defensive. A lot of pressure on De Guzman to form the link with the top two, and I am not sure where the width in our formation is going to come from

It does make sense though

It’s an effective way to slow down the match. And give Marchena credit: he’s dealt out a fair number of assists from that role.

Senna is the key in terms of helping out going forward. Does he have the legs?

It’s also an easy formation to slide around a bit. Bring Wakaso or Cani in for Senna at the half, and we shift back to the regular 4-2-2-2.

Comments on formations

Advantage to us in terms of ball recovery. Advantage to them going forward.

So we absolutely have to keep possession tonight.

van Buyten is slow but effective from set pieces. Nilmar could have a field day, and maybe even get him sent off :) . Perhaps that’s wishful thinking.

Senna and Gonzalo

Are the holdovers from the semifinals.

From the quarterfinals: Diego Lopez, Rossi, Angel(?). And I think Nilmar played in his old stint with Lyon. So I’ll say 6.

The big miss was Cani and the unexpected one Borja, who had one game for Real Madrid in 06/07. Marchena has the most games, 21 with Valencia and Cesar has 20, 16 with Rel Madrid and 4 with Valencia.

Lineup?

What do you guys think of the two lineups?

by Sporting_Villarreal on Sep 14, 2011 8:24 PM CEST reply actions

I actually am not too surprised at ours

I think Garrido wants to make sure we slow things down and don’t give up an early goal. Cani or Wakaso wouldn’t have played 90 minutes anyway (and we are pretty sure Senna will not) so I like starting in a 4-3-1-2 and then switching to 4-2-2-2 if need be.
The real issue—and this would be true regardless of whatever lineup Garrido chose—is we’ve only played 2 league games and been down to 10 men for most of one, so we really have no idea what our best lineup is. It’s a lot of pressure for players like Zapata and De Guzman who have just joined the team, as well as players like Catala and Senna (though a veteran) who have hardly seen any action so far.

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Sep 14, 2011 8:27 PM CEST up reply actions

personally,

I am not a fan of the 4-3-1-2. I think it is too defensive under the circumstances. Clearly Garrido wants to keep this scoreless through the first hour or so and then open things up, but being that we are playing in El Madrigal, I really think that we should take the initiative ourselves and apply the pressure. If we act scared, it will be reflected at the end of the day in the scoreline, and we will be taking 0 points out of the encounter.

by maddi on Sep 14, 2011 8:28 PM CEST up reply actions

I would agree with you if we had Borja

because then I think we could have put Cani out there and attacked with Borja and Cani on the wings. Without him….

I thought we might have put Bruno at LB instead of Catala, played 4-4-2 w/Cani, Senna, Marchena, de Guzman but I don’t see any clear argument for one over the other

and yes, Ribery is running riot over Mario.
Marchena has actually been the best of our midfield, I think.
We were only in it during a short period from mins15-20, mins 27-40 we were definitely hanging on
De Guzman hasn’t really had time to dribble, which is what he wants to do. We need a quick touch to break down the defense—without that, we’ve resorted to long hopeful balls in search of Rossi or Nilmar.
Cani needs to come in to start the second half.

another bad half from Villarreal.

Is our team that bad or is it Gerrido ? or a mix?

Our midfielders move up to slow, so Nilmar and Rossi have to go through 5-6 players… It could happen, but isn’t likely to.

by GarryKan on Sep 14, 2011 9:45 PM CEST up reply actions

Well, don't forget it's Garrido's first CL game

and we have only had two games in the league.
In retrospect the problem with Garrido’s formation is De Guzman may be sitting behind Rossi and Nilmar, but without any width we’re essentially playing 3 against 4. So when De Guzman does get the ball he is tightly marked. Compare that to Bayern who are spreading the field beautifully.

Need lots of improvements

We really need Borja. Need to be more positive and move the ball more. We need to come out of this loss as soon as possible and concentrate on the remaining fixtures. Surely other teams will get beaten as well. We need to go to Naples and get a positive result in the next game.

by Sporting_Villarreal on Sep 14, 2011 10:36 PM CEST reply actions

FT in Manchester: 1-1

Bayern Munich 3 (+2 GD), Manchester City 1 (0), Napoli 1 (0), Villarreal 0 (-2).

0-2 and frankly it could have been worse

we were simply unable to take the ball away from Bayern in midfield. A loss to a superior team.

Actually we were pretty much overrun regardless of what we did, it looked like. Their experience really showed today, it seemed like every one-on-one ball went to them. And they were good at drawing fouls when they lost possession.

DeGuz a bit overawed today, I thought, but to be fair without anyone in midfield able to control the ball much….Senna was ineffective. Our best players were Zapata and Lopez today.

Endavant Villarreal!!

by Allen Dodson on Sep 14, 2011 10:38 PM CEST reply actions

give him time

plenty of good coaches have lost to Bayern. My main concern is that we don’t really know what our best lineup is even with Borja, so not surprising we don’t without him.

Do you think playing Wakaso or Oriol, or going to a 4-4-2 at the start, would have done better today? Hard to see on this evidence that it would have. We just have to put it aside and focus on the next game.

I just don't think that

We had any plan, going on the pitch.
Our possession was bad. We are playing at home, against a good team, I know, but we should be able to pass the ball around.

Would like to know what Garrido had in mind before the match. Why not play Ruben from the start? he scored in the weekend!
Garrido should be assist, and another in charge. He already showed in last season that he isn’t ready, he might be in the future, but not now.
