NEWSFLASH--La Roja to play US National team June 4 in Boston!

Well, technically in Foxborough, as that is where Gillette Stadium is. No word yet on when tickets go on sale. Plan is to put a natural grass on top of the synthetic turf. For any of you who can attend, this would be a great chance to possibly see some of Villarreal's players in action for the Spanish national team, and Jozy Altidore will certainly be part of the US squad.

Often post-season friendlies are an opportunity for a coach to look at some players who haven't seen much time (Bruno, Borja possibly?) but given that the last time these two clubs met the US defeated Spain in the Confederations Cup, Spain is going to want to bring a pretty strong squad I would think. For the USA it's their last game before the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with a game on June 7.

Ticket information will be forthcoming soon I expect. More information as we learn it.

Very, very interesting. Who knew that Ligue 1 was doing so well financially?

I might be in as well – Sidarth, perhaps a carpool up there?

Can’t be sure at the moment, but I would love to go.

the same way he prefers Busqets to Bruno?
seriously, Santi looked good out there.

Del Bosque needs to make changes, his team now is stale .
Valero is great form, how he can be ingnored is beyond me.
Capdevila is surley tired , he had a quiet game

A Good write aboute the situation.

A good piece from La Liga Loca on the proposed stoppage.

More on the stoppage today. The female judge may not make her decision until Wednesday having heard both parties to the dispute. But hey you can buy tickets for a match in which you don’t know the day or time of the kick off.

The airport is done, apparently.

Yes the airport is now open for any citizen that wants to can walk about the runway without any danger of planes taking off or landing.

It’s the La Liga-Castellon travel package!
Tickets to fly through an airport that has no flights, tickets to a game that has no kickoff day or time, and maybe as a bonus a hotel room at one of the coastal developments that hasn’t been built….

How far is this airport form Valenica one, and was it really needed

by Acqua on Mar 26, 2011 7:39 PM CET up reply actions

The new airport is about 110 kilometres from Valencia, about an hour by car. To the north there is Reus airport, 166 km away, an hour and a half by car.

Castellon was the only province in Spain without an airport so the provincial government had to have one.

27’ goal for Cartagena. Botelho intercepts a lazy pass in midfield, takes it inside the area and drills a low shot past Marino.

by Allen on Mar 26, 2011 6:29 PM CET reply actions

HT’ Cartagena 1 VillarrealB 0

this would be a big win for Cartagena—would put them in the top 6. VCB looking better since giving up the goal, Iago started slowly but has come more into it. Yellows for Airam and Gullon in first half

by Allen on Mar 26, 2011 6:49 PM CET reply actions

The game appears to be being played at a fast pace. Cartagena are pressing high making it difficult for the defence to start play from the back. Bad goal to concede, I thought Dervite could have done better to close Botelho down. The only occasion we’ve managed to get the ball up to Airam in the box he looked to have been fouled for a penalty.

by Kenez on Mar 26, 2011 7:00 PM CET up reply actions

castellani in for Airam, who seems to have pulled a muscle

Result: CARTAGENA 2-0 VILLARREAL B

1-0 Botelho (27’)
2-0 Pablo Ruiz (78’)

A good game to watch but two poor goals conceded. How often do we concede goals from free kicks from that area. The offence for which the free kick was given took place on the touchline but was allowed to be taken at least metres inside.

by Kenez on Mar 26, 2011 7:58 PM CET reply actions

Yes, the referee was very poor. Cartagena looked decent but we didn’t force much on the attacking end

by Allen on Mar 26, 2011 8:53 PM CET up reply actions

Villarreal B have now lost five of the last six games, scoring only three times. I think some teams have their measure and the B need to be a little bit more direct.

I thought Castellani and Wakaso did well when they came on.

by Kenez on Mar 26, 2011 9:38 PM CET up reply actions

We’re slipping back in the table and I think you’re right the better Segunda teams have figured out how to play against our passing style. And no question the loss of Truyols has made the defense more fragile. We are still 10 point clear of the relegation places, but another couple of wins would relieve any pressure we might feel.
next week Villarreal B hosts Barca B. Hopefully the big clubs will play each other that weekend too.

I get lost with all the greater than signs, sorry.
Anyhow, congrats to Villarreal C chaval Moises Gomez, scored to day for Spain’s under-17 team as they defeated Belgium 3-1.
Somebody let me know how Jozy did, I didn’t get to see the match and forgot to set the machine to watch it later….oops.

by Allen on Mar 27, 2011 3:41 AM CEST reply actions

I saw the Agr-US Game

My take on Argentina: -> COuld have used RUBEN
w/o Forward who can pressure the defense especially w/o ball, draw defenders & provide Ariel abilties Tiki-Taka doesn’t work vs. Taller and more physical teams. Also, Argentina need to shoot more from outside the box
Argentina needs to mix it up a bit, unless the do, they will not win anything anytime soon
All possedsion w/o end product – USELESS

Also, I am suprised (Central Defenders) Gonzalo and Musccahio are not even being looked by Argentina since both are doing well in Liga and Europe and the CB right now are shakey

USA:
Jozy can;t play as CF, he can;’t hold the ball and tries do much when playing alone up top.
in 2nd half he did well on a nbit more as fwd/fwd when another fwd came on.

It was all Argentina in the 1st half and between even in the 2nd half when US played with 2 forwards and a German American who I think did well as RB

Messi=-> great player , but wasted his talent late trying to beat 4-5 defenders on his own.

BOTTOM Line -> good result for USA
Argentina = will be a FLOP w/o a Great CF

.

by Acqua on Mar 27, 2011 5:50 AM CEST up reply actions

Jozy can’t play as CF, he can’’t hold the ball and tries do much when playing alone up top.
in 2nd half he did Better and played more 2nd fwd/RWfwd when another fwd came on
who scored a poacher goal.

Unless things change, I don’t see Jozy ending as a CF. More like forward/RWFwd or 2nd forwad

by Acqua on Mar 27, 2011 5:53 AM CEST reply actions

One more thing.
Temp grass over Field turf = Terrible for soccer since there is no ball bounce.

Also, I don’t think the field @ the new Meadowland stadium is even 68meter or 114 Yards wide.

Soccer – No respect in USA

re Spain national team:

As far as the Goal.com article is concerned I agree with some of it. In some ways I feel the national side has had the same problem as Villarreal—how do you replace Marcos Senna? They’ve tried to do it w/2 midfielders— Xabi and Busquets—but I would only go with one of these, certainly when Spain are playing at home at least (Actually I would play Bruno in the holding position and Borja with Xavi and Iniesta, but with current personnel I’d go with Santi or Silva in the other attacking midfield spot).

Starting Jesus Navas made no sense to me. He is a one-trick pony—you bring him off the bench to pump cross after cross in, but he isn’t going to have an impact for anywhere close to 90 minutes.

I can’t make up my mind about Torres. He looked better toward the end, but still is a shadow of his blonde Liverpool self. Maybe start Torres w/Villa and see how he does, bring on Llorente later if you need to. I’m not convinced that the team can (or needs to) play to Llorente’s strengths over 90 minutes.

The World Cup victory was great, but the Spanish players, media and fans need to put that behind them now. The players are still attending civic award functions, watch presentations, etc. and they really need to be looking forward, not behind. In the same way, VDB needs to start bringing some new players into the side. It’s not as if the team continually destroyed its opposition in winning the WC—there were plenty of nail-biters, plus the opening loss. The team selection and tactics need to evolve. Right now there is too much reliance on Iniesta and Xavi to create and Villa to score. Those are three great players to rely on, but still….

Agudelo > Messi

by Anonymous on Mar 27, 2011 6:40 PM CEST up reply actions

Jozy was his usual self: getting the ball a good bit and not doing too much with it. Like we saw with Charlie Davies, he looked a lot better pairing up with the shifty Agudelo. Big and small up front seems to be an effective combination.

Argentina lacked the pegada to win against a physical USA side. Onyewu looked pretty good in back (and apparently has been playing at RB for Twente), so watch out for him in the Europa League. Good result for the Yanks, and Messi still has yet to score against us.

by sidarth on Mar 27, 2011 9:22 PM CEST reply actions

American Central Defenders lack technical skills to keep possession or make right passes when they have the ball or win the ball.

This hurts the USA in build up.

Argentina = will keep FLOPPIng in big Tornamnets w/o a Great CF

Cantabria regional government president Miguel Angel Revilla also noted something was amiss after watching matches with the new owner.

“I sit next to him in the stands and crack up with laughter,” Revilla said. “When a defender passes the ball back to the keeper, even when it isn’t a save,
he claps like a madman.”
