Result: Athletic 0-1 Villarreal
Who: Athletic – Villarreal
What: La Liga, Jornada 29
When: 19:00 Spain; 14:00 Eastern Time (still sprung forward)
Where: Estadio San Mamés, Bilbao
TV: GolTV (US)
Confirmed starting XI, per Marca:
Diego López
Mario – Musacchio – Gonzalo – Catalá
Borja – Bruno – Marchena – Cazorla
Rossi – Ruben
A vote of confidence for Catalá (and Iago Falqué); let's see how they respond at La Catedral. No international travel this week, but tired legs may factor in late. Same starting XI as on Thursday evening.
I'll be watching the match on DVR later tonight. Take it away, Allen. We need a result, and I think we will come to play ahead of the international break. 1-2 to Villarreal, with Borja marking the difference. Endavant Villarreal!

very physical first half—-Borja struggling to make an impact and Rossi having 2-3 people around him most all the time. Not sure if its fatigue—we certainly made some crappy passes though, especially early.

I think Bruno has been doing admirably, myself – although he has been pushed off the ball a bit by a physical Athletic midfield.

Has been an intense match so far. We have had some good work by defenders and Lopez to keep us even against a nonstop attack. San Mames is rocking. Unfortunately, we have not been able to keep a lot of the possession – would like to see Bruno and Cazorla step up a little more in the second half. Marchena has been playing deep to help out the defense, and except for a couple of spurts, Cazorla has stayed quiet while Bruno has been everywhere.
HT 0-0

Remarkable that the only yellow card shown was to the goalkeeper. I think the referee has been very indulgent with Athletic. Too often he playing advantage. He’s allowing their physical tactics to prevail.

Valero is having a tough time
and
When Cazorla strueggles = Not much Creativity is left then
MAYBE Cani or Wakaso for Santi

Have to miss the second half now to catch a plane – for work, though, not for fun.

Great effort and great result today. Athletic in the end to just pumping long balls into the area for Llorente.
How can Javi Martinez be in the Spanish squad ahead of Borja?

Another nail biting end. I dont know which book he have read about defeating, but pulling back to our own goal field is STUPID, we got lucky and survived!! Excellent.
Glad to see that he now knows that Marchena dos a lot of good in the middle…. :-)
3points and a good night;-))

Well, retreating is always dangerous, but remember we don’t have fast defenders. Bilbao had two excellent chances from through balls where Musacchio and Gonzalo were beaten for pace. But when all they were doing was pumping balls into the box, just having more bodies on Llorente seemed to help.
I think once Cani got out of the middle of the pitch it was easier for the defense to clear the pressure by finding him—he did a good job of keeping possession. And Wakaso’s run into the corner to win a free kick and effectively end the game was great! The only difficulty was our two best chances in the last ten minutes to make it 2-0 fell to Mario and Marchena—Mario just hit an awful shot, Marchena seemed to slip and couldn’t get his foot across the ball on the volley. in fact toward the game’s end a lot of players seemed to be slipping….at least in the second half the ref called more of their fouls. Rossi and Borja in particular should sleep well tonight—they were knocked down time after time….
by Allen on Mar 20, 2011 10:00 PM CET reply actions
The referee didn’t give a foul until Rossi had been kicked at least two or three times. Only three yellows shown, one to Marco Ruben for shooting after being called offside, one to their keeper for dissent and only one for foul play.
