Result: Villarreal 2-1 Leverkusen
Who: Villarreal – Leverkusen
What: Europa League, Round of 16, 2nd leg
When: 21:05 Spain; 16:05 Eastern Time
Where: Estadio El Madrigal, Villarreal
TV: GolTV (US); tape-delayed (old school!), Friday at 17:00 ET
My projected starting XI:
Diego López
Mario – Musacchio – Gonzalo – Capdevila
Borja – Bruno – Marchena – Cazorla
Rossi – Nilmar
Scoring the first goal would leave Leverkusen with a mountain to climb, as only Sevilla (in the Copa del Rey) has scored 3 times at El Madrigal this season. Most results would see us through, so let's hope that the entire team does not take the day off.
I predict a 1-1 scoreline, with Villarreal advancing 4-3 on aggregate. A Rossi tally (will he win the Golden Boot?) should see us through to the Europa League quarterfinals. Endavant Villarreal!

Catala on left wing, not Capdevila; midfield as you predicted, Ruben starting in place of Nilmar

I am really, really tired of reading all these Leverkusen fans talk about how they are the much better team, etc., etc. I would love to kick their ass and be done with it.
If you go back to almost every single match we have played this year – whether we played brilliantly or horribly – it is almost universal that we play to our level of competition. When we play the bottom half of the table, we don’t show up. Against the top half, for the most part, we play tremendous football. The same has been the case in Europe. I think this is a bit of a Garrido calling card. But the good news is that it should be a benefit this afternoon.

So far so good. Villarreal back to their best version, closing down the opposition and passing into space. Bayer defence looks prone to making mistakes, at least twice they have gifted the ball to Rossi. Another goal should be enough.

Teams through so far Zenith, Spartak, Benfica and Porto.

no, not Zenit—Twente! They won the first leg 3-0.

apart from the two free kicks (one conceded by Marchena, one by Mussachio) which led to Bayer’s best chances, it’s been a lot like the first match. Bayer not creating much and Villarreal nearly catching them on the break several times. Referee cost us a Borja 1-on-1 w/keeper by not playing advantage.
Nice to see Santi get the goal—he is looking very bright and he, Borja, Rossi creating some excellent passing.
Bayer having to take off Gonzalo Castro and put Sam on, and they have two defenders on yellow cards as well

While I agree another goal should be enough, there is no way we should have to score another goal. By any standard, this should be considered a done deal now – if we give up three goals in the second half, well, we would absolutely deserve what we got.

TV just showed the artist Ripoll—he is a big Villarreal fan (had nice art exhibit in Valencia recently)

Our potential opponents: Benfica, Braga, Dynamo Kyiv, Porto, PSV Eindhoven, Spartak Moscow, and Twente Enschede. 3 from Portugal, 2 from Holland, and 1 each from Russia and Ukraine. Great diversity.
