Happy Birthday, and Happy Anniversary!

We'd be remiss here at VillarrealUSA if we didn't wish a big happy 24th birthday on the 1st of February to our Bambino, Giuseppe Rossi, currently enjoying his best season ever and newly signed up as part of the Villarreal family until 2016. As those of you following him on Twitter may know, he's a big fan of cupcakes, and we hope he enjoys some today!!

And for that matter, a happy first anniversary on the job to our coach Juan Carlos Garrido. His record since being hired is mighty impressive: 78 points in 39 league matches, including an astonishing 17-1-1 record at El Madrigal, and the 45 points Villarreal have amassed in 21 rounds of the league so far this season are a team record, and an all-time record for a third-placed team. But apart from the numbers, he's brought back the pride and the passion that we associate with this amazing club. Happy first anniversary in charge, el mister, and thanks.

We wish both of them many years of continued success with the Yellow Submarine!

Wish Rossi and garrido many Success in coming years.

Garrido hiring was the best thing Villarreal did in a while.
Too bad it took Villarreal till Feb 1, 2010 to hire him…..

It’s a remarkable record for a new trainer in La Primera, even more so when his start was not so great. Six of the 10 losses came last season. His first game in charge was a loss at Mallorca followed by a second successive away 6-2 loss at Real Madrid. Also those away defeats at Malaga, Getafe and Almeria.

Four of the 10 defeats are to Barcelona and Real Madrid and somehow we’ve also managed to lose twice to Getafe.

I didn’t really follow Villarreal B, but Garrido from the 1st few weeks looked like he was
going to be somthing very good.

You guys keep forgeting that Garrido would had EVEB better record if Rossi wasn’t gone in
Feb 2010 and it took till Lat March for him to get into the grove after regaining fiitness.

Also, Villarreal would have finished 5-6 if it wasn’t for teh injury to Senna, Cazorla and
the parting of Double G before the games

Congrats to Rossi! Congrats to VCF!
P.S. I was born on the 2nd of February =)

per as.com
spurs offered 30m euros 4 rossi w/bonuses tat could reach 35m euros

per maddi:
Spurs apparently have no transfer strategy other than to throw lots of money at various players who do not seem interested in making lateral moves to similar-sized clubs, and hope something comes out in the wash.

Disappointed that we didn’t snatch Chori Castro or Emana at the last minute, hopefully we wont regretit come the end of season. Still, Madrid are in our sights now, Nilmar back and Senna soon. We have the best striker in the league based on form! Subcampeons 2011??

Here is an article from a Mallorca perspective discussing Castro, among other things:

http://www.realmallorca.co.uk/news/opinion/2011/a-perfect-storm

I wonder if the Valencia statement is true now they have brought on the Brazilian dude, though. Hard to know—they are clearly going to be doing a lot of loading and reloading this summer.

As for Emana, he hasn’t played in a while (injury) so I suspect that may have been why his name dropped off the radar in january?

BTW: the US government has decided to crack down on soccer streaming sites on the internet. Go to rojadirecta.com and you will see what I mean. Check out rojadirecta or atdhe on twitter for more information.

I’m so glad that the US has its priorities straight and is making sure the cable companies control over content isn’t being compromised by those of us wanting to watch Villarreal B on Canal Nou Dos….

Whilst Santi again trained apart from the squad today there is a big question mark now over the availability of Marco Ruben.

…i am worried about Santi since it seems to be a pelvic injury of some kind that is troubling him—seems to be sort of a chronic thing. As we all know our last three goals have come from his passes, so if he is out for any length of time that is not good.

I had figured Nilmar wouldn’t play the whole game against Levante, so if Ruben can’t go….

by Allen on Feb 2, 2011 5:28 PM CET up reply actions

So I am, they keep saying he’ll be OK for Saturday but when other players have had this pubis type of injury they’ve taken time to recover. Per Wikipedia the pubis forms part of the hip joint which together with the sacrum and coccyx, comprises the pelvis.

by Kenez on Feb 2, 2011 6:03 PM CET up reply actions

I know in England (at least in the league proper, not the EPL) a player on loan may be recalled by the loaning team in case of injuries. Is that true in La Liga? I would not expect it to apply to a loan outside the league, but I am wondering specifically if Villarreal could “repossess” Montero if injury to Santi turned out to be serious.

(also ironic that if Jozy had stayed he probably would’ve played some this Saturday, if Ruben can’t make it)

In more positive news, Senna returned to running today with the team, though not training.

by Allen on Feb 2, 2011 6:42 PM CET reply actions

The Football League is a lot more flexible with regard to loan players with different categories of loans. Even though the transfer window has now closed within a few days clubs will be able to make "emergency loans". Certainly I’ve known clubs recall players from loan spells. Spain appears to apply strictly the transfer window. From what I see the minimum period of a loan is the period between the two transfer windows. There appears to be no right of recall unless receiving club fails to comply with the agreed terms.

The future is looking bright even though, we didn’t bring in another midfielder…. Hopefully senna returns with a bang:-)

I follow spurs a little too. they really needed an attacker, and were pressured in the end of the day, so thats probably why they made that offer. Liverpool were quicker than spurs with luiz s.

On danish sights the offer from spurs, on Rossi is discussed – and the generally opinion is that it was a huge over price for Rossi.
So here is my question; Is it my yellow-heart talking, when I feel that Rossi is worth much more?? more in the level of Torres transfer??

Glad to see how well Garrido has been doing, even-though I hoped to see Michael Laudrup as our coach… but just let him be frustrated on Mallorca, and let the rest of us enjoy the good times in yellow:-)

by jens the dane.... on Feb 2, 2011 7:27 PM CET reply actions

news just in on the official site that Marco Ruben will miss the next two matches with a muscle tear. And w/o Jozy we either have just Rossi and Nilmar as strikers or we call up a B team player

Rossi: accepting Spurs’ bid on the deadline day would’ve been crazy. We would then have had a few hours at most to make a bid for another striker, get him to Villarreal for a medical and sign papers. Not gonna happen. So to accept a bid for Rossi on January 31 would basically be saying we’re giving up on the Champions League. Not gonna happen.

Plus, Rossi has said all along he is happy to stay here unless one of the big Italian teams comes in for him. If that happens—in a summer transfer season—Villarreal has plenty of time to negotiate terms and plenty of time to find a replacement.

My sense is that valuations on deadline day are always inflated. Even Torres. Given his recent form and his injury problems in the last year, sure it’s a great deal if he has great years and Chelsea wins the league, but that’s not a given.

by Allen on Feb 2, 2011 7:44 PM CET reply actions

Liverpool paid 41m euros for Andy Carroll, who is still unproven. Rossi’s value has to be up in the Torres class.

With Ruben out it looks as though Hernan Perez will get the call, as he’s already training with the squad this week.

by Kenez on Feb 2, 2011 8:15 PM CET up reply actions

i read report in summer g.rossi could be sold 16-20m eurosby villarreal
that is b4 this season results, etc

however, spurs & pl teams just throw monies around, so i think da35m or whatever it was surely was over value deadline offer.
spurs wanted any striker & thought monies would pay them augero, forlan., rossi f. llorente .

by jackson on Feb 2, 2011 9:35 PM CET up reply actions

Hernan Perez did play in pre-seaon w/rossi if I recall right

Interesting comments from Matilla and Bruno. Hope the youngster heeds the lessons of a fellow ex-canterano. If Matilla keeps his head down, he will be alright.

altidore was asked
y da loan move?
he said: " for playing tim and getting back to being comfortable on the field."

garrido made him nervous ?

by jackson on Feb 3, 2011 2:17 AM CET reply actions

Sure sounds like Altidore was not comfortable w/garrido ways or Villarreal players

by Acqua on Feb 3, 2011 3:34 AM CET up reply actions

2,000 people showed up at Altidore’s introduction. Still impressive, but not 20,000. Also, why?

by sidarth on Feb 3, 2011 3:01 AM CET reply actions

Altidore is rookie w/potental not a star player

by Acqua on Feb 3, 2011 3:32 AM CET up reply actions

Well, he has played in the World Cup and is somewhat known. And besides, even though Bursaspor plays in a stadium about the size of El Madrigal, Bursa itself is a city of over 2 million people… And I am sure they want to make him welcome and (if all goes well) make a bid to buy him in the summer. At least the big deal about the signing makes it more likely they’ll play him, which can only be good for everyone concerned.

I don’t quite know what Jozy meant about “getting back to being comfortable on the field”. Perhaps it’s just that when you don’t get to play much, when you do get in there it’s hard to relax and just play your game; it’s easier to be comfortable on the field when you know you’re not fighting for playing time so much. I don’t know. I just think he needs to play a lot more to develop the sort of first-touch control that would really help his game.

By the way, last year’s leading scorer in the Turkish league was Ariza Makulula, a 29-year old striker from Portugal whose previous high point was scoring 20 goals for Salamanca in the Segunda eight years ago. I gather quality strikers are rather thin on the ground.

And speaking of birthdays (which we originally were) February 3 is the birthday of Villarreal stalwart and World Cup winner, Joan Capdevila!! Happy 33rd Birthday! And it’s great to know you will continue to play in yellow for a couple of more years yet…

Ernesto Valverde’s Olympiakos were knocked out of the Greek Cup yesterday (I believe it was the quarterfinals), 1-0, by our Europa League rivals PAOK. A goal by Salpingidis did it, after a 1-1 draw in Athens.
It must have been interesting as there was no crowd present to see the goal: the match was played behind closed doors as punishment for PAOK supporters’ recently creating mayhem at a league game.
