Giuseppe Rossi: 6 Months on the Shelf
To answer Ravi's question, it cannot get any worse for Villarreal.
The most serious fears have been confirmed: star striker Giuseppe Rossi will be out up to six months with a torn ACL in his right knee. First of all, our best wishes to Il Bambino. Get well soon.
In addition to the effects on the Italian national team, which will be preparing for Euro 2012, this is disastrous news for Villarreal. Already in the relegation zone, nearly out of Europe, with a manager under fire, and new signings and old stalwarts alike playing below par. Now add in injuries to our two best attackers (Rossi and Nilmar) and the continued absence of our starting right back (Ángel López). Brutal.
Time to muster up some courage, as Juan Carlos Garrido put it. But you cannot help but wonder if Rossi should have come off yesterday at halftime. 3-0 down at the Bernabéu, with a vital match on Saturday.
Many of us asked for that change in the game thread, but Garrido did not listen. Rossi was substituted in obvious discomfort in 60', replaced by Mario Gaspar. That was the penultimate step to reaching the 5-5-0.
In the short term, look for Joselu to get an extended opportunity with the A team. Hernán Pérez is also in line for additional playing time. And expect Villarreal to be active in the winter transfer market, even if just to reach 40 points and safety in La Liga.
As Rossi said before his injury, together we can escape this predicament. Now it's time for management, players, and supporters to prove him right. Ánimo Rossi and Endavant Villarreal!

Marco Ruben, of course
Has the weight of Vila-real on his shoulders. Maybe Airam can give him a break every now and again?
I can’t help but think that Garrido ran Rossi into the ground to save his skin. This makes me angry at Garrido more than anything.
The team better react, or I’m off the Garrido bandwagon.

well i agree to some extent but
the team relied on Rossi the last few months of last year too. And I think if anything playing him against Madrid in a 4-4-2 was better than having him as the lone striker.
As far as we know Rossi felt fine going into the game, even with the stories about him having flu or something he started.
But I agree with you that if the team can’t react to this by pulling together and finding a way to produce some wins, change at the top is needed. I think this injury buys Garrido more time to get things right, but it doesn’t give him a free pass.

To think I was disappointed with Barca's win
Truly puts it into perspective…Though January is not far away, and surely a signing will be made, whether on loan or whatever. I see this as two months to scout for a suitable stopgap, what about you guys? You mentioned Toivonen before…

Nope, it's over for Villarreal
No Rossi or Nilmar means it’s going to be a long cold autumn. I just don’t see where the goals are going to come from. Marco Ruben? Errrrrrrrrrrr…..
Ruben can score some goals
but he’s a goal poacher, not a creator like Rossi. And he also just doesn’t get the benefit of any calls. It’s like the refs think because he is big and strong they have to call him for the foul, it seems to me. Maybe that is something you get with experience.
I’d actually like to see a 4-4-2 with Ruben and Camunas that morphs into a 4-3-3 with Perez as well if need be.

Ruben scores goals
But he isn’t as dangerous a player as Rossi or Nilmar, doesn’t draw as many yellow cards or need to be watched as closely.
That could be a plus
Under-estimate him at your peril, still a top class striker if he is playing for a UCL team. Surely?

The midfield used to chip in
This is the problem right now. Borja, Cani, and especially de Guzman need to score some goals. Stat.
The strikers will contribute a bit better than a lower-half team, I think. Ruben and the B team bunch are OK to stay up and maybe even sneak a European spot. But the Champions League dream is off, both this season and next.

you optimist
I’m not even thinking about the Europa League, because I don’t even know if it would be worth it anyway. I think our goal ought to be to get something like 46-48 points, finish in midtable and build from there. But you’re right, the midfield has been MIA.

a loan from somewhere might be good
because we have to think Rossi will be with us next fall now, which we couldn’t have expected before. And we have Uche returning. Ironic that all this happens after we finally pull the plug on the Jozy Altidore experiment.
We’ve often had success—at least in the short term—with players who have been on the outs at their current clubs and need to get their game back with us. Riquelme, even Forlan fit that description. Who does Man Utd have that we could use? :)

Dimtar Berbatov or Micheal Owen maybe
I heard from a friend of mine that both Berbatov and Owen were demoted to lead the second team during their Carling cup match. If either of them or not getting playing time in the first team, we could have them for loan. But the trouble might be their weekly pay may be a bit too much for us to handle.
by Sporting_Villarreal on Oct 27, 2011 10:01 PM CEST up reply actions
Yeah
PSG want Berbatov I think…
Owen would probably be reluctant to move country as well. How about an MLS player as a stopgap? They want games right? Donovan???

problem for us might be incorporating them into the side, though
Sad to say, but I wonder if Donovan or someone like that is going to be interested in Villarreal because of Jozy’s negative experience, and I wonder if the club feels the same. Sid and I thought Michael Bradley would have been a good signing during the summer but I don’t think he was ever considered.
And whoever it is, Garrido will have to take them and bring them into a side they haven’t practiced with or played with, and as we’ve seen that hasn’t gone especially well.
We have seven games until the international break and then the opening of the transfer window. Until then we will have to make do with what we have, and if the team hasn’t jelled by then Garrido may be gone anyway.

by Allen Dodson on Oct 28, 2011 1:40 PM CEST up reply actions
yeah
Garrido is fairly lucky in a sense that Rossi is injured, as if he delivers poor results without him, he can blame it on his absence…
As for Donovan, he went to Everton, and they were struggling cash-wise. But hey, I have no clue who potential targets could be…any names floated around the media yet?

not that i've seen
they’ve been busy until yesterday floating potential coaches’ names. EPM did note that there was some rule change that might help us—it used to be players in Spain who played 5 matches couldn’t make a midseason domestic transfer, but that rule has now changed.

TERRIBLE
Once he recovers from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, there is a chance that he won’t be able to regain his previous form. Don’t expect anymore lucrative offers from Juventus or Barcelona for Rossi.
yeah, it's a horrible week for young strikers
Canales, now Rossi. And Gurpegui too.
Well, we never got a lucrative offer from Barca or Juventus last summer either!!
But I agree with you we are unlikely to see someone come in for him until he’s shown he can regain his previous form.

Oh No - Not Rossi!!
This has put the nail in the coffin. The season could’nt go worse.
I like the idea of playing Hernan Perez, Camunas and Ruben up front with Borja, Bruno and Cani right behind. This system seems really attractive, but just a little bit worried about the defense.

Misfortune
From the game against Odense away where we could not find the net despite our best efforts, I knew luck was going to abandon us for the long haul. This news is too cruel. The least we can hope is that Rossi is able to get back to form…
What about Uche
Can someone explain me why we sent Uche away on loan when we already have a depleted squad and playing for glory in 3 competitions?
We might think about getting him back. He will give us some pace in the final third.
by Sporting_Villarreal on Oct 27, 2011 9:46 PM CEST reply actions
I don't think we can do that, can we?
I didn’t think Spanish loans had an “injury recall” clause like they do in England. But someone else on here will know, I’m sure.
As to why we sent him on loan, I assume to get him playing time. It did seem like we had Rossi, Nilmar and Ruben, and if need be Airam could have come up from B (we didn’t expect Joselu to impress so soon). but it does look a dumb decision now.
Endavant Villarreal!!
I think this calls for a major shift in strategies.
The double pivote may not work anymore without Rossi up front. I think the more attacking 4-3-3 system will/ should be adopted.
by Sporting_Villarreal on Oct 27, 2011 9:54 PM CEST reply actions
and a major shift in fans' strategy too.

the nature of supporting a smaller club
in a league where the bottom 3 teams are relegated means that sometimes that is a reality. Even Valencia a year or two ago struggled with that. Atletico has too, to some degree, over the last couple of years. I think the response says a lot about the club. Teams like Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruna (currently 9th in Segunda A) – which only a short time ago were at or near the top of La Liga, took the drop. Whether we end up like them, or whether we can regroup and focus for the rest of the year to make the best of a bad situation, will say a lot about what Villarreal is really made of.

Villarreal rumored target Andres Guardado
has agreed a deal with Valencia, leaving from Deportino on a free in June 2012. I guess Valencia has started their player churn early!

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
I am a huge hater of El Tri, but I have always liked Guardado. Oft-injured but talented, he would have fit in perfectly here. That puts a huge dent into Depor’s promotion campaign, though.
Speaking of Mexicans, we should look at the younger De Nigris in Monterrey. He’s looked great every time I’ve seen him paired with Chicharito, so maybe it’s a selection bias. But he is a good back-to-goal player.

...
I’m curious, what are the club’s finances like? specfically, if they want to buy a striker, what would the budget be like? Also the profile of the striker, would they go for fast, running through defensive lines kinda player?(the chicharito variety) or prefer a player who can hold the ball up?(considering that the team might change it’s style of football a bit, atleast untill they get back up the table)
Honestly, I think it’s a little premature to suggest that surviving in la liga is the minimum target. It’s been a bad run of games, I agree but I still feel that villarreal will an arsenal(;)) and will be fighting for 5-8th by the end of the season.

we aren't going to spend a lot unless we sell someone
at least that seems to be the case, which is why someone like Nihat would be attractive. I think we are looking for a stopgap player, anyway, not a big money signing. We are likely to have Rossi and Nilmar next season unless they sow they have fully recovered from injury, which is possible in Nilmar’s case but not Rossi’s. And Ruben, and Uche. Plus Airam and Joselu in B.
We really need a run-through-the-lines player, I think. We would have to change our play rather a lot otherwise.
