Result: Espanyol 0-1 Villarreal
Who: Espanyol – Villarreal
What: La Liga, Jornada 21
When: 21:00 Spain; 15:00 Eastern Time
Where: Estadi Cornellà-El Prat, near Barcelona
TV: ESPN3.com, ESPN Deportes
My projected starting XI:
Diego López
Cicinho – Musacchio – Marchena – Capdevila (C)
Cani – Bruno – Borja – Cazorla
Ruben – Rossi
Big match in BCN: no surprise. But this time it's out by the airport against surprisingly formidable Espanyol. Let's see how they respond without numerous regulars.
Third place and automatic qualification into next season's Champions League would be nice, but our distance from fifth place has been my barometer all season. By that token, a draw would be OK. And our poor away form speaks for itself.
Let's hope for an attractive match. Endavant Villarreal!

A blast from the past: José Enrique may be up for sale again, this time to a top EPL team. Good for him, but I wonder if he’d like to come back to Spain? We could use a long-term replacement at left back…

Gonzalo will start ? why would predict he wouldn’t
OH PLEASE

I saw extended highlights of the game last week between Getafe & Espanyol and Getafe were the better team in the first half which they lead 1-0. It was some poor defending that allowed Espanyol into the game. I’m usually pessimistic but I feel confident that Villarreal can get a result tonight.

Make that a FT final: Osasuna 1-0 Real Madrid. Beautiful.

Well, La Liga is over. Wonder if Madrid slips back closer to Liga Justa at this point. Let’s get 3 points today and make a statement of our intentions, shall we? Endavant.

A win for Villarreal will reduce the gap with Real Madrid to 6 points.

0-0, 6’. Gonzalo muffs a bloody sitter. Another corner from Borja, headed down by Marchena. And another half-chance for Cani from Rossi.

0-0, 15’. A leg-breaking challenge from the enforcer Duscher on Cazorla. Hope he gets sent off soon. Capdevila FK into the wall.

sure looked like a foul on Ruben in the area didn’t it…

0-0, 25’. Sergio Garcia hits the bar. Second time that we’ve been sliced up through the middle. Marchena and Gonzalo are not functioning as a unit right now.

oof. i think that just got tipped by Lopez against the post

Lucky not to have given up a goal to Sergio Garcia there.
What a ridiculously fast-paced match.
by maddi on Jan 30, 2011 9:27 PM CET reply actions
wow that was a real lash from Marquez. We need to step it up
by Allen on Jan 30, 2011 9:30 PM CET reply actions
0-0, 30’. A hammer from Javi Marquez, but thankfully just over the bar. As acqua said, we’re playing with fire in the back right now.

0-0, 33’. Ruben hits the bar off a corner. Chances at both ends.

Rossi w/yellow
Ruben Shot saved and hits the cross bar
1-1 on Post/Cross bar

clearly not a goal, tipped off the bar by kameni and down

0-1, 45’. When you thought there was no angle at all. Rossi with an absolute golaaaaaaazooooooooooooo.

my stream went down but i was able to hear it on Radio Nou—announcer is shouting himself hoarse!!
by Allen on Jan 30, 2011 9:46 PM CET reply actions
0-1 HT. Maybe a bit undeserved, but we have the best player on the pitch. Musacchio has to come in to fix our central defending. And Sergio Garcia still is awful.
by sidarth on Jan 30, 2011 9:46 PM CET reply actions
How did Rossi score from that tight angle? This boy is special!
by Rony on Jan 30, 2011 9:48 PM CET reply actions
I thought that we were trying to play it too close up front in the first half. Really the only time we broke from the half way line was the Rossi goal. A fantastic finish.

too close but not enough width. Seemed like Cani-Santi-Borja-Rossi were frequently close together on the attacking left of the pitch. Diego Lopez has saved our bacon in the first half. Marchena good positionally but beaten for pace, Capdevila beaten back a couple of times too
by Allen on Jan 30, 2011 9:54 PM CET reply actions
If Garrido does bring Mussacchio on, I am curious, based on his recent defense-oriented substitution theory, if he actually brings Mussacchio on as a 5th defender, perhaps going to a 5-4-1 or a 4-2-3-1.

great moves by Mario, Ruben just can’t put in the rebound

0-1, 54’. Santi is hurt; seems to be his knee. Troublesome.
by sidarth on Jan 30, 2011 10:09 PM CET reply actions
no one in support of Rossi and Santi gives the ball away
by Acqua on Jan 30, 2011 10:17 PM CET reply actions
0-1, 60’. Double change by Espanyol, taking off both of their defensive midfielders. All or nothing so early is a bit strange…
by sidarth on Jan 30, 2011 10:18 PM CET reply actions
0-1, 67’. Rossi skims the bar, just denying his double. The resulting corner is cleared away.

Santi passes have been off
GK tips rossi shot that hits the cross bar and goes for corner

0-1, 71’. Datolo on for the ineffective Sergio Garcia. I wish he had stayed on the pitch for our sake.
by sidarth on Jan 30, 2011 10:26 PM CET reply actions
Cicinho on for Cani. Rossi with a good chance for 2nd, couldn’t pull the trigger
by Allen on Jan 30, 2011 10:27 PM CET reply actions
0-1, 72’. First change: Cicinho on for Cani. Mario may move forward in the formation.
by sidarth on Jan 30, 2011 10:27 PM CET reply actions
not a good giveaway there by Cicinho, mario has to take a card to stop the attack
by Allen on Jan 30, 2011 10:30 PM CET reply actions
yes but we haven’t finished very well either—trying to get too perfect a shot sometimes
by Allen on Jan 30, 2011 10:37 PM CET reply actions
0-1, 90’. Second change: Joan Oriol on for Santi. Well done, sir.
by sidarth on Jan 30, 2011 10:45 PM CET reply actions
0-1, 90’+1. Third and final change: Musacchio on for the match-winner Rossi. Another great finish.

FT 0-1. Huge 3 points. Best of the year? Not based on our play, but the result may well be. Endavant!
by sidarth on Jan 30, 2011 10:49 PM CET reply actions
FT!!! 0-1. Three points, only six off of second in La Liga, and a valuable cushion against Espanyol for the rest of the season.
by maddi on Jan 30, 2011 10:51 PM CET reply actions
A BIG BIG WIN. We did not play our best up front—I thought we should have put the game away about halfway through the second half. I thought Rossi and Ruben did not work well together, and Ruben went down too easily instead of playing on—ruined a couple of attacks.
I have to say I thought we did a better job pressing in the second half—it didn’t bother me that they had most of the possession because we had more chances to score (and better ones) than did Espanyol. It always seemed to me if we gave up a goal it was going to be when we got caught out quickly, which NEARLY HAPPENED with the last (short) corner.
I thought Bruno and Borja played well, actually—it was more in attack where we just couldn’t get things quite to fall for us. Santi made some great runs but also gave the ball away more than usual.
I thought the referee clearly wanted to let the game flow which I applaud in general, but there were some fouls he let go that I would not have. Rossi’s shirt looked like it had been through the wars when he came off!
It was a great game to watch…

Good win……
Villarreal Midfield didn’t creat much in 2nd half
Khomeni with 2 saves (Rossi and Ruben) both hitting Crossbars and Mis Sitter by Gonzalo
Good for Villarreal Sergio gracia shot @ Lopez when through

BUT
A GREAT AWAY WIN

Now I know why Cicinho was not playing much @ Roma
He passes for RM/RB are not good and a bit tentative(maybe rust)
by Acqua on Jan 30, 2011 11:03 PM CET reply actions
Cicinho was quite tentative passing and did look rusty—was better defensively. Apart from Barcelona, is this first time we’ve had only 40% of the possession? Another interesting stat—9 offside calls against Espanyol, 0 against Villarreal.
A positive that should not be forgotten—Diego Lopez made some big saves in 1st half, and took command of his area in the way many of us have been asking him to do, coming off his line aggressively when needed.
When Gonzalo missed that sitter early on I was fearing the worst, but thankfully that miss and the shots off the bar didn’t come back to haunt us.
I expect Nilmar will be ready for the Levante match. I’m sure he would have gotten a quick runout today if we had been a couple of goals up.
