Yes, three points is a must with both Valencia and Espanyol winning this weekend. Radio Nou reports same lineup as above

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 8:10 PM CET reply actions

I thought people would appreciate this:
The ESPN Deportes commentators for Madrid-Mallorca say that Real has an indisputable starting XI, and that the substitutes are significantly worse. This was with Xabi Alonso on the bench, Higuain injured, and Ramos playing at center back.

That’s not even as many injuries as we’ve had. Apparently even big-budget teams have that problem…

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 8:11 PM CET reply actions

As for this match, we have to control Griezmann. La Real doesn’t have too much going forward, aside from Joseba in the air, so I like our chances in a ball-control match.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 8:12 PM CET reply actions

Our history against La Real at El Madrigal has not been the greatest, however. 2-3-3 in 8 matches, with only 6 goals in favor.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 8:17 PM CET up reply actions

And this ref sent off 2 of our players against Hercules in Alicante. Hope history doesn’t repeat itself…

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 8:19 PM CET up reply actions

as I remember he was very fussy wasn’t he? Sent off trezeguet for protesting as well as Borja and Mussachio. That was maybe the most physical game we’ve been in all season as I recall

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 8:28 PM CET up reply actions

Starting XI confrimed as above. Mario retains his place and Cazorla returns.

by Kenez on Jan 23, 2011 8:13 PM CET reply actions

only 35 degrees at game time, should get below freezing by the end

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 8:57 PM CET reply actions

bright start for us, Mario very active down right wing

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:08 PM CET reply actions

0-0, 10’. Sleepy opening at a half-empty El Madrigal. A few corners for us, but nothing much to trouble Bravo.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 9:11 PM CET reply actions

yeah as soon as i said bright start the game died!

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:15 PM CET reply actions

lol @ ref

15" cross bar for Sociedad

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 9:17 PM CET reply actions

a foul on cani but should not be a yellow card. Come on.

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:18 PM CET reply actions

we somehow survive defensive chaos then Rossi produces fine save from Bravo at other end

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:22 PM CET reply actions

0-0, 20’. Chances on both ends: a scramble in our box and a Rossi counter. And Rossi finishes with a nice chip, but he was clearly offside. Getting closer, but our wingers need to impose themselves further.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 9:22 PM CET reply actions

24’ Rossi nice cross, Ruben kicks over it though

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:27 PM CET reply actions

Inches away from being 1-0.
Great cross bt Rossi for Ruben

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 9:27 PM CET reply actions

Here we go.

WHY DID LOPEZ not come for teh Cross?

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 9:30 PM CET reply actions

and we give up a goal from 2 headers. Great.

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:31 PM CET reply actions

0-1, 30’. Two headers turns into a goal for Aranburu. Bad luck for Diego Lopez. We need to pick it up; maybe Jozy is due for an appearance?

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 9:31 PM CET reply actions

Patehtic !

0-1

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 9:31 PM CET reply actions

GREAT GREAT Steal and Pass from Santi

and Great finish by Rossi
1-1

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 9:41 PM CET reply actions

1-1, 41’. Our best player Santi sets up Rossi 1v1 with a brilliant pass. Great run to set it up as well. And Rossi has no problem beating Bravo. Justice so far.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 9:42 PM CET reply actions

ROSSI!!!!

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:42 PM CET reply actions

bad cross by mario.

1-1 @ HT
Deportivo feed on ESPN@ = great

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 9:47 PM CET reply actions

good game so far, end to end stuff

by Tim L on Jan 23, 2011 9:47 PM CET reply actions

Xabi Prieto could’ve gotten a second yellow there just before the break, yes? Also some question as to whether Gonzalo could have been called for handball in the area from a cross. I didn’t see it at the time, neither did anyone else

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 9:48 PM CET reply actions

Gonzalo wasn’t in the box, but Bruno was. However, I don’t think it hit Bruno.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 10:04 PM CET up reply actions

1-1 HT. We were better, but little clarity in the attacking end. This is a game for Jozy; we need to hold up the ball for our best players Cani and Cazorla.

3 points for the taking in the second half.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 9:48 PM CET reply actions

Our midfield is looking good to me—Santi has been our best player, Cani coming on strong after first 15 minutes or so.
I’m not quite sure how they avoided scoring in that one scramble in our area but we can say the same at the other end. We just have to keep banging away at their goal in the second half. We are applying pressure, making Bravo work, just haven’t been able to get to one or two rebounds
The cold weather has clearly affected the attendance

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:00 PM CET up reply actions

This ref is a bit erratic, has allowed Real to get away with some heavy challenges particularly on Cazorla and has given fouls to Real for very little. Surely there was a back pass by Real to their keeper towards the end of the half.

by Kenez on Jan 23, 2011 9:54 PM CET reply actions

Mario was the wrong side of the player on the goal and Musacchio slow to pick up their scorer, can’t really blame Diego for it.

by Kenez on Jan 23, 2011 9:56 PM CET reply actions

2-1, 47’. Rossi capitalizes again on a Santi steal and through-ball. Nice way to start the half.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 10:03 PM CET reply actions

Cazorla steals it, passes to Rossi , it works again!! 2-1

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:03 PM CET reply actions

Santi off the post!!!!

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:04 PM CET reply actions

Rossi to Santi . Cross bar

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 10:07 PM CET up reply actions

sorry, the big post=crossbar

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:05 PM CET reply actions

2-1, 50’. Bright start to the second half. Santi hits the bar. Almost game over; let’s keep pressing.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 10:05 PM CET reply actions

nice save on Ruben

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:07 PM CET reply actions

their #19 should have a card for persistent fouling

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:08 PM CET reply actions

how did they miss that offside???

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:10 PM CET reply actions

need # 3

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 10:16 PM CET reply actions

nice shot by Cani, nice save too

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:17 PM CET reply actions

Rossi on the wheel play off the corner but ball wouldn’t sit for him

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:18 PM CET reply actions

2-1, 65’. La Real is still in the match, but just barely. One well-timed attack should do it though.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 10:20 PM CET reply actions

Cani should have put that chance away

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:25 PM CET reply actions

That was 3-1 or at least mak ethe gK make a save

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 10:26 PM CET up reply actions

aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Rossi pass on platter for Cani he shoots wide

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 10:26 PM CET reply actions

Mussachio great play after bad giveaway

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:27 PM CET reply actions

and great save off Rossi on the counter.

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:28 PM CET reply actions

Marchena coming on for Cani 77’

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:33 PM CET reply actions

2-1, 78’. First change: Marchena on for Cani. Makes sense; Garrido loves to bring in injured players for a few minutes before giving them a full 90.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 10:35 PM CET reply actions

Valero out, Cicinho on 85’

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:41 PM CET reply actions

2-1, 86’. Second change: Cicinho on for a quiet Borja. Good thing Santi was on his game today.

by sidarth on Jan 23, 2011 10:42 PM CET reply actions

Marchena maybe the answer as CM – He played there today
and
Lopez came out on 2 Crosses

2-1 Nice win, Cazorla unfornatune to hit the cross bar
Cani = 2nd game in rown = Did s0 s0

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 10:50 PM CET reply actions

Ony 4 chances in 2nd half

1 Rossi goal
2 Cazorla Cross bar
3) Cani shot wide
4) GK good save on Rossi

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 10:52 PM CET reply actions

no, Ruben had a good low shot saved and also tried to lob the keeper, just over the bar. ESPN (for what it’s worth) showed us with 27 attempts on goal (some blocked, some wide): 15 in first half, 12 in second.
Sociedad no attempts on goal in second half. I suppose that’s right if what Lopez came out for were crosses. it was good to see him commanding his area.

by Allen on Jan 24, 2011 12:45 AM CET up reply actions

Whew. I was worried because the ref seemed not to give us much and the linesman at their attacking end let some offsides go, but though the opposition controlled the ball more toward the end we had some nice counters to relieve pressure.
A big, big win given that Espanyol and Valencia both won. Next match at Espanyol, will be really tough—they are playing very very well right now.

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:52 PM CET reply actions

Espanyol are missing Osvaldo though, but are doing well

by Acqua @ Match. on Jan 23, 2011 10:54 PM CET up reply actions

well I thought Cani and Borja played pretty well but Bruno and Santi were pick of the midfielders for me. Ruben was unlucky today—nice save on a shot I couldn’t believe he got away, and tried to lob the keeper and put it over. But he tracked back and applied some good pressure on the other end to create turnovers.
Rossi was excellent today, had two well-taken goals and could have had two more.
I thought Griezmann was very good for them.

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 10:55 PM CET reply actions

I thought the whole team worked hard and played some good football. However our superiority was not reflected in the scoreline. It could have been worse if the ref had awarded them what I thought was a penalty committed by Musacchio.

by Kenez on Jan 23, 2011 11:02 PM CET reply actions

you mean when Sarpong got the yellow card?

by Allen on Jan 23, 2011 11:16 PM CET up reply actions

Would have been soft pk , there was minium touch

by Acqua on Jan 24, 2011 2:06 AM CET up reply actions

Well, I watched it again three times on ESPN3. The only contact I see is Mussachio’s right hand hits Sampong’s left. Is it a foul if he does that in the middle of the pitch? Maybe. Should it be a penalty in the area? It would have been awfully soft if you ask me.
Sampong never argued. Mussachio sure had a guilty look back at the ref though.
Muniz Fernandez was nowhere near the action—he had to run from quite a distance to wave the yellow card.

by Allen on Jan 24, 2011 12:43 AM CET reply actions

I love how we are getting into the habit of beating these mid table to low table teams : Mallorca, Almeria, Sociedad and Osasuna. Really shows our strong side. Also we MUST hold on to Giuseppe at all costs, give him whatever contract he wants!!!

by Nick on Jan 24, 2011 1:04 AM CET reply actions

Just watch his movement for the second goal, exceptional. The quickness of thought to nip back and across the defensive line to remain onside is brilliant!

by Nick on Jan 24, 2011 1:07 AM CET up reply actions

I caught interview with Rossi afterwards on Radio Nou…he was asked about the weather conditions (freezing temps) and the Jersey boy just said it was no big deal…“normal”. Loved it.

by Allen on Jan 24, 2011 1:33 AM CET up reply actions

I congratulated him on Twitter, told him to buy Santi a beer!!
