PrintUPDATE: Villarreal has drawn Belgian side Club Brugge K.V. (watch out for Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic), Croatian champions NK Dinamo Zagreb, and Greek runners-up PAOK F.C. (who eliminated Fenerbahce) in Group D of the Europa League (h/t to capercat). I'm most concerned about PAOK from Thessaloniki, who have quality and experience in Pablo Garcia, Muslimovic, and Salpigidis, not to mention the rabid Greek home support. But we should aim to win the group and go through comfortably.
The B team gets underway today in Valladolid. As manager Javi Gracia says, the Segunda A is a very tight league, so the details make the difference.
Here is the squad for this season's curtain-raiser:
GKs: Vicente Flor and Diego Mariño.
Ds: Mano, Héctor, Carlos Tomás, Dorian Dervite, Jaume Costa, Ángel Ortega and Diego Jiménez.
MFs: Marcos Gullón, Natxo Insa, Nico, Hernán Pérez, Facundo Coria and Torres.
Fs: Airam, Iago Falqué and Joselu.
Missing out are Kiko and Mario, who started yesterday's Europa League match in Belarus. I wouldn't expect them to play much for Javi Gracia. Injured are striker Gerard Bordas, Brazilian midfielder Tiago Dutra, and defender Joan Truyols. Endavant!
In call-up news, Santi Cazorla is the only non-World Cup winner selected by Vicente del Bosque for Spain's Euro 2012 qualifier in Liechtenstein and friendly in Argentina. Well deserved. That also means Joan Capdevila and Carlos Marchena continue with La Furia Roja. But no Bruno Soriano, though he'll get more chances.
Another year, another B teamer with his South American selection. Now it's Hernán Pérez, traveling to Japan and China with the Paraguayan national team. Congrats.

Also fun to note: No Valencia players in the Spanish squad for the first time in forever. And 3 Villarreal players! Endavant. Though Mata will be called up from under-21 duty soon enough.

Sevilla is going to struggle big time at Dortmund. I follow the Bundesliga quite a bit and BVB has the players — Barrios, Kuba, Subotic, Hummels, etc. — to really give them trouble. Add the Sudtribune of the Westfalenstadion on top of that and I’m seeing a Sevilla loss (on the road at least).
As for us, I’ll take it. This group is winnable and that’s what I’m expecting.

I think we’ve lucked out on the schedule as well. The league match after every Europa League game is at home, minus a short trip to Levante. So the squad will have time to recover for the big matches on the weekend.

Starting XI for Villarreal B:
Diego Mariño; Ángel Ortega, Carlos Tomás, Dervite, Jaume Costa; Natxo Insa, Marcos Gullón; Hernán Pérez, Coria, Iago Falqué; y Airam.
The defense should be okay once they’ve played a few matches together. But there’s a worry up front about scoring goals. The midfielders will have to chip in.

First half ends 1-0 to Valladolid. I was impressed with Falque, but the quality of final ball was lacking in general—we had the edge in possession but didn’t do anything dangerous with it. Airam not getting any opportunities. I didn’t see the goal, but Marino impressed me otherwise as being pretty assertive and taking control on free kicks into the box, etc.,— he was just called up to the Spain under-21 side.
Kaiserslautern leading Bayern 2-0 in the Bundesliga match tonight, something of a surprise.

Their #21, Sisi, is skinning our right back (Angel) pretty much at will—his cross led to the second goal (plus poor marking from the center backs). But I agree—I think the defense will tighten up, especially when Kiko returns.
Going down to 10 men so early in the second half really killed it. Now 3-0.

That means no sign of: Oliva; Catala, Joan Oriol, Kiko; Cristobal; Altidore.
4 central midfielders and 2 wingers is a bit strange, though Montero isn’t a striker on this team. Again no cover for Capdevila; too bad Catala has not panned out so far (a la Marcano?). And Oliva has to be looking for a loan deal. The rest will get a chance in Europe/Copa.
