Result: Lechia Gdansk 1-1 Villarreal
What a display on Thursday at White Hart Lane. U.K. down, Poland to go on the club's European preseason swing. But as George W. Bush reminded us, don't forget about them.
Lechia Gdansk has an interesting history, having been associated with Solidarity and counting Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa among its supporters. The club will get a new 44,000-seat ground in preparation for Euro 2012. I am unfamiliar with their players, but expect a grand environment for today's match.
The game will be aired on Punt Dos in Castellón at 2 pm Eastern Time. I will miss the match, so please leave your comments and reactions in this thread. Endavant Villarreal!

B team news:
Nice article on Iago Falqué and how he thinks the Villarreal way will fit him. And Diego Mariño has been selected for the Spanish under-21 side.

Streams may be a little scarce for this game but here’s one.

There’s an interesting thread on the forum at Forogroguet as to why Gonzalo may be on his way.

from what I can gather it involves breaches of club discipline—specifically around the Getafe and Zaragoza matches last year…and the assumption is there must’ve been something else recently, hence why he didn’t play at Tottenham…but my Spanish (and Google translation) may not be very accurate
ATDHE.NET is listing a stream available for today’s match, I note:

Rumors are that Godin, Gonzalo, and Ibagaza, among others, liked to go out on the town. This is Garrido’s attempt to put his stamp on the team. All for one, one for all; fine by me.
Good thing Santi is humble and keeps his nose out of trouble. Sets a great example for the youngsters.

Not much of a match, we have a very inexperienced group out there and apart from a few runs from Montero not much has happened…Gdansk has just scored from a corner kick…Oliva tried to punch it and missed, I think..he got credit for an own goal!

I noticed last season, Olivia is o.k backup, but does make 1-2 simple mistakes. that’s why he didn’t play much in Copa either.

That was an absolutely awful punch by Oliva. They replayed it in slow motion at halftime. Juan Carlos for backup goalie, anyone? I’m in.

HT Lechia 1-0 Villarreal
Lineup vitually the B team from last season except Oliva in goal and Fuster captain. Typical game from the B team lots of possession without troubling the keeper. Lechia not really in the game until about 35th minute when they forced three corners in succession, the last one from which they scored direct after a mistake by Oliva.
Team:
Oliva
Mario, Mussachio, Kiko, N. Insa;
Marcos Gullón, Matilla;
Montero, Fuster, Cristobál;
Marco Ruben.

Thanks, Kenez, I was still trying to work out who all the midfielders were (the fact that the video is about 10 secs ahead of the Polish commentary on my stream didn’t help)!
Oliva tried to punch the corner, missed it completely, the ball went in off the side of his chest.
A few runs from Montero, only a couple of shots from Fuster that either went well over the bar or lacked power.
Quite a bit different match in energy, enthusiasm and quality from that at White Hart Lane.

santi and borja immediately improve things in terms of quality, now rossi on—we’ve hit a post and are controlling play for what that’s worth…

Boresfest till 65"
It picked for Villarreal when Rossi, Bruno, Valero came in

Is Ruben is poacher type of forward?
This if what I get from the 2 matches I watched

Yeah mostly, he’s no real outstanding technical attributes but is a good finisher and manages to score a healthy amount of goals. Reminds me a bit of John Dahl Tomasson who was very effective for us a few seasons ago!

Class of Rossi, Santi and pleasingly Borja really showed towards the end. Some very nice link up play, Fuster looked sharp in the first half. Montero was positioned on the right, I’d think he’d be more effective on the left. Kiko and Musacchio looked comfortable as a partnership as well.
Matilla really reminds me of Xavi, never wastes a touch, drifts into space and always available for the ball.

Montero :
Lechia defenders really figured out Montero . From the highlights I saw of 1st half, his step over moves and 1 0n 1 didn’t go anywhere v. Lschia.
Montero may have to learn @ this level he may have to sometimespass then keep doing 1 step moves and 1 on 1.
my 2 cents

Full time: Lechia 1-1 Villarreal Goal Cazorla 76min
Things improved from the 65th with the introduction of Angel, Bruno and Rossi. Several chances created in the final 25 minutes but only the one taken by Cazorla. Juan Carlos replaced Oliva for the 2nd half but had very little to do.

It did look hot, didn’t it? Yeah-as soon as those three came on it was completely different. The ref seemed to enjoy giving out yellow cards, including one for Rossi for putting the ball in the net when he was offside. I thought the fans enjoyed his display of skill myself.
I think Oliva felt he was interfered with on the missed punch—he certainly seemed annoyed that the Polish player was right on top of him. But he really did make a hash of it.
Not sure we learned anything we didn’t already know from this one. I would’ve liked a second goal just because the Gdansk bunch were guilty of a lot of pushing and stupid little fouls, but at least their fans went home happy. The only way they were going to score was if we put the ball in the net for them, which we duly did! And they did have a red Solidarity logo on their shirts at belly button height; it’s neat that they take pride in that.

Some nice pictures—all from the first half, unless I missed some. I like the mascot! Nice flowers and kiss for the referee too. I don’t know who the linesmen were but they seemed more competent than some of those in the recent WC….

…according to ESPN, L’Equipe reports Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro wants a move. Monaco, Valencia, and Villarreal mentioned as being interested. Replacement for Rossi in case of a big-money move perhaps?

Marchena to be presented as a new player of Villarreal tomorrow.

Interesting that it’s a 3-year deal, longer than any of the prior reports. Looks like Marchena will replace Pires/Venta/Senna as the club’s old hand. As long as the price is nominal (2 million Euros for a World Cup winner can be considered so), center back is a good place to have experience.

This article suggests Mallorca might be satisfied with monetary compensation rather than reinstatement in the Europa League:
I doubt UEFA would recognize a Commercial Court of Palma decision, though. I did see something suggesting Mallorca would appeal to CIS, is it? in Switzerland on Tuesday of this week.
