World Cup Day 5 Match Thread
Back to teams I care about. 3 matches again today:
New Zealand 1-1 Slovakia: I've been impressed by both squads in recent matches. Slovakia is making its first appearance at the World Cup since independence in 1993 and boasts a strong attack led by Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik. New Zealand were overmatched at the Confederations Cup, but striker Shane Smeltz can score in bunches.
Cote d'Ivoire 0-0 Portugal: Match of the day and maybe of the group stage. A decisive result in the Group of Death probably books a spot in the last 16. All eyes will be on Drogba's arm and Ronaldo's pouting, I mean talent. I've got no clue how this match will play out.
Brazil 2-1 North Korea: On paper, one of the biggest mismatches in World Cup history. Can the North Koreans stay disciplined and keep it competitive? I don't think so. Let's hope Nilmar can get off the mark quickly.

Closer to home, sources in San Sebastian suggest that Llorente is very close to signing a four year deal for Real Sociedad.

Villarreal are being linked with Moroccan born midfielder Adel Taarabt, as an addition for the B team.

mourinho has implemented cowardice and defensive style football which is so ugly to watch, this doesnt feel like a WC anymore.
euro was way more exciting than this.

I was thinking the same thing this morning. Not sure I’d have blamed it on Mourinho (like a true Barca fan), but there seems to be a strong desire for opening match draws. Hopefully Group H brings some joie de vivre tomorrow.

New Zealand 1-1 Slovakia FT. Best finish of the tournament to date, and frankly no less than the All Blacks (playing in white) deserved. Both sides’ first World Cup point, congratulations.

Cote d’Ivoire 0-0 Portugal FT. The Elephants were unfortunate not to come away with all 3 points. Lille’s Gervinho was man of the match (even though it was awarded to Ronaldo, who hit a post and made a few more enemies), while Drogba was quiet as a sub. Still all to play for in Group G.

I was tremendously impressed with North Korea. I do not know who they have played to get ready for the World Cup, or how many times they have ever played in front of that many fans, but they were downright fearless. They pressed forward throughout, every opportunity they had, they were very organized in defense for the most part, and many could argue that while Brazil played more stylish football, PRK were for large parts of their match their equal in terms of totality of play. I can see them causing real problems for the Ivory Coast and Portugal.
