No Europa League; Highlights: Real Sociedad 2-1 Villarreal B
UEFA has confirmed that Villarreal's 7th-place finish in La Liga does not merit a Europe League berth. Our faint European dreams now depend on Mallorca's insolvency. The Spanish league (LFP) already affirmed Mallorca's presence in Europe, financial difficulties and all, but we know how much such promises are worth. Stay tuned.
The B team put up a valiant effort but lost 2-1 away to leaders Real Sociedad. Sociedad took the lead, completely against the run of play, on an awful penalty call against Catala. Though Marco Ruben leveled the score from the spot, we never fully recovered. And Montero wreaked havoc again for the 6th-place team in Segunda. Not bad.
Other news and notes:
- Cristobal still thinks the B team can win the Segunda. Right. That has the same odds as Castellon avoiding relegation.
- Jozy Altidore (where have you been?) scored the tying goal in the USA's 2-1 victory over Turkey. He could hardly have missed.
- Add another reason to root against Spain: Joan Capdevila may not be in Vicente del Bosque's starting XI. His replacement: Real Madrid center back Alvaro Arbeloa. Hopefully Mati Fernandez will give him fits.

Notice that not a single squad member plays outside of Italy. I can’t imagine Rossi going anywhere but Italy now.

I agree; this is the death knell for his time in Spain. How sad.
But he remains classy, as always:

Interesting to note that in a poll on the official website Rossi only received 13.7% of the votes.
Nilmar 49.72%
Llorente 36.7%
Rossi 13.58%
Surely being out of the shop window of the World Cup depreciates his transfer fee and lessens the chances of Rossi moving this close season.

Sad for Rossi, tough start to Season, then passing of dad.
He worked hard to get back to starting lineup and was in good form. Too bad he lost to overhyped Quagliarella.
Hopfefully he bounces back from the setback and has good season in 10/11 where ever he plays.

rossi should have been picked over laquinta, he is their best young attacker.

Being out of Europe next season may not be such a bad thing. With Pires, Javi Venta and Ibagaza now having departed it will give the the new additions from the B team an opportunity to consolidate without the added pressures of European competition.
With Garrido not seeing Marcano, Escudero or Eguran in his plans for the future it looks now that there will be a base of 14 players from last season, with possible further departures if the right offers came in. To this base will be added six to eight players from the B team, with Mario, Joan Oriol, Musacchio, Catala, Matilla, Cristobal, Marco Ruben and Montero being the most likely candidates. Then what will happen to Altidore? A season in the B team. The squad could then look like this:-
Goalkeepers: Diego López and Oliva.
Defenders: Ángel, Mario, Gonzalo, Godin, Catalá, Musacchio, Capdevila, Joan Oriol;
Midfielders: Cani, Cristobal, Bruno, Senna, Matilla, Fuster, Cazorla, Montero;
Strikers: Rossi, Nilmar, Llorente, Marco Ruben:
Garrido needs to utilise the disappointments of being out of Europe and the omissions from World Cup squads to motivate the squad to be in the top four next season.

There will be a few departures from that list. And I don’t think Altidore will play in the Segunda; he can earn the club some money on loan, at a minimum. But I’m generally in agreement. The Copa del Rey needs to be a developing ground for some B teamers as well.

we have lot of quality in our b team and if we can keep them together for 2-3 years then surly we would compete for CL spots and a lot more.
im really excited about next season and teh players from b team, but have my doubts in garrido. hope he does well.
teh players to go after teh world cup are rossi, nilmar, maybe cazorla, godin. just hope that riog doesn’t sell for any price, these are real quality players and we deserve top money for them.
we shud try to get an experienced striker. guiza wants to come back so he can be our next leading force.

It’s terrible that Rossi misses the World Cup. Same thing with a bunch of others, like Cazorla, Senna and Diego López. If you’d ask me a month ago, I would have guessed that all four would be in the squads. The Spanish players I can understand, but Rossi? That’s a big mistake from Lippi.
I’m pretty sure that Capdevila will be in the starting XI for Spain though. Otherwise, Del Bosque must have something against Villarreal players :)
Nice to see Altidore score. But the Villarreal star in the World Cup will be Nilmar. Hopefully he’ll get to play a lot.

As a big hockey fan, Italy’s squad selection reminds me of what Russia did in the Vancouver Olympics. To prove that the KHL was a viable competitor to the NHL (which it’s not), the Russian team was a 50/50 split, and even the line combinations were one or the other. Unsurprisingly, the tournament ended in disaster: a 7-3 quarterfinal thrashing by rival Canada.
I think Italy (and Germany, which did the same) are due for an early exit. And Spain will suffer from the all Madrid/Barca starting XI.

South Korea 0-1 Spain
Capdevila played 90 minutes for the B team. Spain only rescued from an embarrassing draw by a last minute strike from Navas.

i dont think lopez and cazorla really deserved to be picked. lopez in all honesty hasnt had a better season than either of reina, valdes or casillas. plus cazorla was on teh sidelines for a long time and hasn’t been really convincing like he was last season or before that.
thoughs senna not being played is a joke. spain dont have many quality DM and senna has more than enough quality to fir teh bill.
playing with busquets as a DM would cost spain a lot. xabi alonso is not teh ideal DM he is more of a deep lying playmaker. i haven’t seen martinez really play so don;t know much about him. but surly senna is better than all of them in that position.
