Highlights: Zaragoza 3-3 Villarreal
For a great comeback, maybe you have to defend poorly first. Cazorla took over the match after the opening half-hour (hope Vicente del Bosque was watching), while Godin was the most culpable for the deficit. And what a pass by Ibagaza on the first goal! Villarreal goal of the year, in my book.
As Garrido said, the match was a microcosm of the season. If Sevilla do us a favor on Wednesday, I will be content with the year.
News and notes:
- As noted, a Sevilla win in Wednesday's Copa del Rey final gets us into Europe.
- The players' final day of training is Thursday, but our 9 internationals are gone.
- A team recaps from the club website, Marca, and AS.
- And the B team pulled another point out of the fire, drawing 2-2 in Murcia. A Marco Ruben PK and late Joan Tomas header earned them a share of the points.
Now all that's left is to watch the battle for relegation and the La Liga title. Can Xerez somehow beat the drop? I say yes.

Altidore shakes off criticism from Hull’s Ian Dowie
Jozy was a pussycat is responding to Dowie.
He didn’t deny pulling back at practice but said he had a good reason.
“For me that was more geared towards, you know, just the pressure of everything and the summer coming,’’ he said. "I was just being extra careful, but in games giving my all.
You know what I mean? Because you just have to be smart in the way you handle things. But at the same time I think he’s just looking out for my interest, which is good.’’

80’, Villarreal C 1-0 Jerez CF. Nico just gave the C team the lead in its fight for promotion to Segunda B. Two-legged tie.

And Jerez CF scores late. Villarreal C must score in Andalucia to advance in the Tercera playoffs.

At halftime in all 5 games:
Barcelons would be champion, while Xerez, Valladolid, and Tenerife would be relegated.

Same results at full time. Barcelona (win) are champions, while Xerez (draw), Valladolid (loss), and Tenerife (draw at Valencia) are relegated. Racing (win) and Malaga (draw vs. Real) stay up. Deserved on the whole.

and Villarreal becomes the only team to grab point back in Camp Nou this season

With Valladolid and Hull down, what happens with Cesar Arzo, Jozy, and Marquitos? All had a buyback/return option.
by sid on May 16, 2010 9:16 PM CEST reply actions
Both Arzo & Marquitos were signed by Vallodolid on permanent contracts to 2013 with buy back clauses whereas Altidore was only on a season long loan to Hull City,
I can’t see Villarreal wanting to buy back either Arzo or Marquitos as there are better options in the B team for free however Altidore will be back at Villarreal in July unless they can sell him or loan him out again to another club. Here’s hoping he has a good World Cup to increase his value.

Villarreal spent all week calling for the professionalism of Atletico against Getafe, but they forgot that the first they had to do the business themselves. They started the match unmotivated and erratic as if it meant nothing to them. In the second half we saw a side of Villarreal we rarely see playing the ball forward quickly and vertically and could have even won the match.
Why start with Ibagaza and then bring on Senna? Surely in away games it’s best to start solid, make sure that you don’t concede early goals, then go on and try to win the game. We are conceding far too many goals away from home, 27 in ten matches under Garrido.
Garrido must reconsider over the summer his approach to away games.

Players knew win/lose or draw , they would still finish 7

That Villarreal finished the season seventh in the table may look like a success, but it is not. They launched this campaign with supposedly the best squad in its history and to be out of Europe – unless Sevilla give a helping hand, is not the prize the fans expected, not even close.
At the start of the season I expected us to compete for a Champions League spot against Valencia, saddled with great debts and Sevilla. A club with 8 current internationals and 4 ex internationals should not finish behind the likes of Mallorca and Getafe.

You can always hire Valverde and finish 10th next season
