Highlights: Villarreal 1-0 Sporting, Villarreal B 2-0 Girona

A perfect day in Vila-real: 2 home matches, 6 points. Seems like the cold scared a few spectators away, but the VillarrealUSA penya was out in DC. Close enough, right?

The A team would have drawn this match earlier in the season (see Almeria's visit to El Madrigal). However, we played a complete 90 minutes this time around, including a big early save from Diego Lopez on Mate Bilic. And a nice 'ole' display to run out the clock at the corner flag near the VillarrealUSA penya banner.

Great win against a Girona side unbeaten in its previous 8 matches. Gerard Bordas and Marco Ruben with the goals, while Cristobal did his best Bruno impression. An eventful match for Gerard: came on for Natxo Insa in 55', scored in 58', yellow card in 61', second yellow in 72'. On the pitch as a sub and still in time for an early shower, not bad.

Some links to bask in the afterglow:

  • The A team is getting results. Game recaps from the club website, AS, El Pais, ESPN Soccernet, and Marca.
  • The B team has lost one match at the Mini Estadi. Who says 2,000 people can't provide a home-field advantage? Game recaps from the club website and Marca.
  • Who is happy? The goal-scorer Godin (over 2.5 seasons since his last goal). And our manager of the present and future Garrido.

Don’t forget that there’s midweek action this week. Villarreal are away to one of our close rivals, Getafe on Tuesday night (KO 22:00 CET).

We’ve rightly given attention to the B team this season but it’s also worth noting that with five matches left the C team could be in the play offs to reach Segunda B, the division the B team left last season. Should they achieve prpmotion Villarreal would have a team in each of the top three divisions.

The squad for the match at Getafe has been announced although the official site does give the names. Ángel returns at the expense of Marcano, and Escudero omitted once again.

The squad:

Keepers: Diego López and Oliva.
Defenders: Ángel, Javi Venta, Capdevila, Gonzalo, Godin, and Musacchio.
Midfielders: Senna, Bruno, Cani, Pires, Fuster, Cazorla and Ibagaza.
Forwards: Llorente, Rossi and Nilmar.

Interestingly: Only Barcelona and Real Madrid can boast better form than Villarreal over the last eight games. 5 wins, 2 draws, and the lone loss in Malaga.

In full fairness, Garrido only took 3 points from his first 3 La Liga matches; granted the losses were away to Mallorca and Real Madrid.

I think the site moderators have done their best to accommodate all points of view. But everyone is human; there were sky-high expectations coming into the season. I think Garrido is the right man for a club like Villarreal, and I’ve been happy with the marriage since day one. And there’s no doubting Valverde is a winner, albeit not for a club with our ambitions.

And you should invite kqql back; I for one miss his commentary.
